Can you pass the OneDayOnly tech test?

When OneDayOnly was looking for a new web developer, its quickly learned it is challenging to find suitably-qualified and competent candidates.

“As an ecommerce business, you need the best developers, and can’t spend two months on-boarding the new guy onto the team,” said OneDayOnly.

The company explained that the problem with saying “we want the best” in a job advertisement is that you receive a huge number of CVs of people who think they are the best.

OneDayOnly solved this problem by creating a “nerd puzzle”, which applicants had to solve before being considered for the developer position.

“Potential candidates needed to complete the multi-stage puzzle and in doing so, OneDayOnly knew – before even speaking to the candidate – that they’d be qualified for the role.”

“With a few cryptic hints, applicants were instructed to download a repo, unzip, do some tasks, and finally submit an almost empty email as evidence of their worthiness.”

The puzzle worked as hoped, and enabled OneDayOnly to employ a great web developer after a single interview.

You can view the puzzle here: OneDayOnly’s Waldo puzzle game on Github.
