Internet Explorer 6 Countdown
Microsoft’s sixth browser developed for Windows, Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), was first launched in August 2001 and shipped with the company’s popular Windows XP operating system.
Nearly a decade later and many people are still using the browser – a headache for web designers and security officers alike.
Many campaigns have been launched to try to bring about a quick death to IE6, and Microsoft itself has joined the fight.
On its ‘Internet Explorer 6 Countdown’ website, hosted at http://www.ie6countdown.com/, Microsoft is urging Internet users to join the fight against IE6.
“10 years ago a browser was born. Its name was Internet Explorer 6. Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye,” Microsoft stated on the Internet Explorer 6 Countdown website.
“This website is dedicated to watching Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide, so more websites can choose to drop support for Internet Explorer 6, saving hours of work for web developers.”
Microsoft is appealing to Netizens to join the fight against IE6, urging website owners to display a ‘countdown banner to Internet Explorer 6 users only’, and all Internet users to educate their friends to upgrade IE6.
“Friends don’t let friends use Internet Explorer 6. And neither should acquaintances. Educate others about moving off of Internet Explorer 6,” Microsoft said.
