Top programming languages in the world – February 2017

The Tiobe Index and PYPL Index for February 2017 have been released, with Java maintaining first place – but losing market share.

Tiobe noted that MIT Media Lab’s Scratch language entered the top 20 this month, thanks to its use in schools.

Languages which showed growth in both indexes included JavaScript and the R language.

The top 10 ranking from each index is shown in the table below.

Calculating the rankings

PYPL – The more a language tutorial is searched, the more popular the language is assumed to be. The raw data comes from Google Trends.

Tiobe – The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers worldwide, courses, and third-party vendors. Popular search engines are also used to calculate the ratings.
