Most popular programming languages in the world
The latest figures from the Tiobe Index and PYPL Index show that Java is still the most popular programming language in the world.
Tiobe and PYPL’s numbers from April 2017, detailed in the table below, also reveal that C-family languages and Python continue to dominate.
Python was a big gainer in the PYPL index, showing a 3.1% year-on-year increase in market share. Java and C showed a big drop in the Tiobe Index year-on-year, both losing over 5%.
The biggest mover in the charts, which did not make the top 10, was Go.

Calculating the rankings
PYPL – The more a language tutorial is searched, the more popular the language is assumed to be. The raw data comes from Google Trends.
Tiobe – The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers worldwide, courses, and third-party vendors. Popular search engines are also used to calculate the ratings.
