Microsoft building AI that can read and answer questions
Microsoft artificial intelligence experts are working on systems which can read text and answer questions about it.
“We’re trying to develop what we call a literate machine: a machine that can read text, understand text, and then learn how to communicate, whether it’s written or orally,” said the researchers.
AI experts state that machine reading is more difficult than other AI tasks, like image recognition, because there is more ambiguity involved.
To generate answers to questions about text, an AI will have to look for the context of words and background knowledge it has on the subject.
Microsoft said an effective machine reading system could advance how search engines work.
This would see machine reading systems responding to queries in the same way a knowledgeable person would when asked a question.
