Microsoft Copilot coming to Windows 10
Microsoft has confirmed that it will roll out its Copilot AI to Windows 10 users in the near future.
Copilot is a tool for Windows that can create content in Office apps using text prompts, answer questions, and interact with documents.
The Windows 10 Copilot will initially only be available to Windows Insider users in an upcoming Release Preview update. The tool will feature on the right side of the taskbar.
“We will be introducing Copilot in Windows (in preview) for devices running Windows 10, version 22H2 Home and Pro editions,” said Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program Team.
“When you select it, Copilot in Windows appears at the right of your screen. It will not overlap with desktop content or block open app windows.”
While adding the feature to Windows 10 may make it seem like Microsoft’s AI plans are moving backwards, the move isn’t surprising.
According to Statcounter GlobalStats data, Windows 11 accounts for 26% of current Windows installations, while Windows 10 holds a 69% share of the Windows market.
Microsoft launched Windows 10 in July 2015; by 2020, the operating system had reached one billion devices.
However, the end of the operating system is in sight. In April 2023, Windows announced that it would not release any new updates for Windows 10.
Therefore, the current version of Windows 10 — 22H2 — is the final version of the operating system.
All editions of the operating system will still be supported with monthly security updates until Microsoft ends its support for the operating system on 14 October 2025.
