BBM for Android, iPhone – 100% commitment, no date

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)

BlackBerry said on 30 September that it remains 100% committed to bringing its BlackBerry Messenger service – aka BBM – to Android and iPhone. The new launch date, however, remains unknown.

BlackBerry initially planned to launch BBM for Android on 21 September 2013, and BBM for iPhone on 22 September 2013.

The company did not launch BBM for Android as planned, but did start to roll out BBM for iPhone on 22 September. The iPhone launch was halted a few hours into its global rollout.

BlackBerry said that it is pausing the global roll-out of BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) for Android and iPhone to make sure the app “lives up to expectations”.

Andrew Bocking, head of BBM, said that an older version of BBM which was released online caused massive traffic volumes, forcing them to delay the launch to help them to block users of the older version.

He said that the BBM team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block this unreleased version of the Android app when they go live with the official BBM for Android app.
