WinAmp shut down by AOL
WinAmp, the well known media player, will no longer be available for download from 20 December 2013, a notice on its website announced.
The Winamp.com website “and associated web services” will also be shut down from that date, the notice said.
In a report on the era-ending announcement, Ars Technica quoted former WinAmp employees who had previously blamed AOL’s mismanagement for the media player’s demise.
While all the downloadable components of WinAmp such as skins, plugins, and the player itself can live on after the website is shut down, it isn’t confirmed how services such as Shoutcast will be affected.
However, members of the WinAmp community expect the Shoutcast Internet radio service to join Nullsoft TV and the Winamp.com website (including the forums) in Internet Valhalla.
