HD PVR update
Last week MyBroadband reported that DStv HD PVR subscribers may be forced to wait longer than expected for service additions such as DStv on Demand.
MultiChoice has responded to these reports confirming that the DStv on Demand service for HD PVR users “is likely to be launched only next year and will be delivered via a seamless download”.
MultiChoice GM of corporate affairs Jackie Rakitla has also revealed that “the process of releasing software updates is implemented after rigorous testing to ensure that we do not compromise the quality of the decoder experience. As a result, it is often difficult to provide specific details before the tests are fully concluded.”
Rakitla added that “we release software upgrades on an ongoing basis as part of improving and enhancing decoder performance. Since the launch of the HD PVR decoder in 2008, we have released 8 software upgrades and these will continue in the future.”
The most recent update was applied on the 8th of September and addressed several problems within the HD PVR firmware. These include the deletion of entire series; improvements to fast forward, rewind and TV guide load times.
Rakitla also confirmed that the information given in the article regarding the new ‘entry level’ HD PVR was correct, adding that the company “cannot provide any further information on this decoder as we are still in the early stages of development of this product. Typically products such as these take 12 to 18 months to bring to market.”
At this stage DStv HD PVR subscribers have access to a single High Definition (HD) channel which features a mixture of sports coverage, movies and documentaries. Currently the service is broadcast in 720p, which is not technically full high definition. This is however the industry standard worldwide.
