World’s first autonomous cargo ship to launch next year
The world’s first remotely-operated, crewless cargo ship is set to embark on its maiden voyage next year, reported The Wall Street Journal.
The Yara Birkeland is an autonomous cargo ship created by Norwegian companies Yara International and Kongsberg Gruppen.
The ship is battery-powered and priced at $25 million, but will have low operating costs and can be operated via a ground station.
The autonomous vessel is expected to launch in late 2018 and will initially feature an onboard bridge with crew and controllers.
Eventually, the bridge will become an on-shore operation centre and the ship will be controlled with no crew aboard.
