One kahrk idea. What if there is a fire, or critical systems failure? You need some sort of crew to monitor systems and intervene if things go pear shaped.

What if you actually read the article?

The autonomous vessel is expected to launch in late 2018 and will initially feature an onboard bridge with crew and controllers.

Eventually, the bridge will become an on-shore operation centre and the ship will be controlled with no crew aboard.

So, not actually autonomous in any way, shape or form.
