Google+ introduces ID verification badges

Google is adding ID verification for public figures and for those who have been added by many of the social networking site’s users as contacts.

The verification process is to help members of the site identify the official profiles or public figures such as actors, singers and politicians, as well as popular Google+ users.

“When you visit the profile of a celebrity or public figure, you’ll see a verification badge next to their profile name. This will help you easily determine which profiles are owned by real, verified people,” wrote Wen-Ai Yu, a Google official, on the company’s blog.

Verified user accounts will feature a gray checkmark inside a lighter-gray circle next to the person’s profile name.

The verification process is in line with Google’s policy where site members need to create profiles with their real names, to promote a more trustworthy environment than on other sites where members make use of pseudonyms.
