Amazon launches free e-book borrowing

Amazon recently launched the Kindle owners’ lending library, which allows Amazon Prime members to check out up to one e-book per month for free, with no due date for the “return” of the book.

The company didn’t give an exact figure as to how many books are available for lending, though it did mention that over 5,000 titles were available, including more than 100 current and former New York Times bestsellers.

An Amazon Prime membership costs $79 (R634.86) and gives members free access to the lending library, as well as the Amazon Prime Instant video service.

The new lending program works with kindle e-readers but is not compatible with Kindle apps that run on other devices such as the Apple iPad.
