AMD shifts competitive focus away from Intel
Having played second fiddle to Intel in the desktop space for years, AMD has decided to take on smaller fish in the mobile processor space.
According to AMD spokesman Mike Silverman, “we will all need to let go of the old ‘AMD versus Intel’ mindset, because it won’t be about that anymore.”
AMDs current market share sits at 19 percent, down from 23 percent in 2006, and the recently released Bulldozer architecture is unlikely to bolster this thanks to poor performance that was met with disappointing reviews. As a sign of the times, AMD has also recently let go 1,400 members of its workforce.
The company will be taking on the likes of Qualcomm, Samsung, Nvidia, and Texas Instruments who currently have system-on-chip offerings in the mobile market space, and has promised a strategy update in February which should explain how the company plans to move forward.
