Amd shifts competative focus away from Intel to mobile market

End of and era. Let's nonetheless hope that Piledriver will be good.

so they want to take on the likes of chip designs that even intel have failed to beat, while they cannot beat intel?? ... what are they smoking??

Expect Intel prices to sky rocket.. Still remember the days of the Athlon XP pwning the presshot P4s :D

Intel will become a monopoly. Prices will rise astronomically. They will become like Microsoft. Where can we get a cracked version of Intels i7 for my sons gaming PC?

On AMD's R&D lab benches?

I think this article is bloody sensationalist...

This to me just sounds like AMD are refocusing, and rather than just competing in the x86 space, they're going to also try and go into the SoC space and take on the ARM guys as well.. and they are actually relatively well positioned to do that. Their architecture does lend itself to being used in a lower power envelope than Intels, and AMD have a really good graphics system as well that can probably be nicely scaled to the mobile realm as well.

This by no means we won't be seeing AMD x86 processors.. but you might start seeing a different side to them, and their x86 line might start converging with whatever mobile stuff they have up their sleeve.

Intel is also expanding into the mobile market, with phones and tablets of theirs coming out early next year.

At any rate seems like very bad news to me, can't imagine much worse than only have one player in any given industry ecspecially something like CPU's through. Hopefully AMD will make a come back in the desktop market at some point.

Well this is quite insightful from AMD,they are reading the market correctly.

To those thinking that intel will become a monopoly actually the reverse is happening, with windows 8 to support arm based architectures we will actually in a few years have a multitude of processors to choose from be it for traditional pcs or even tablets etc its no longer going to be a two horse AMD vs Intel battle its going to be much bigger and fiercer,AMD will do well to have a strategy to move forward in the changing market.

I have an AMD E350 chip in my laptop... and it's bloody brilliant. Plays Left 4 dead, and will last an entire day off the battery (word processing). I seriously think AMD will do well in that sector. This is also because they produce both the cpu and the gpu, so I'm thinking their designs aren't limited to some other manufacturer like Nvidia.

Its been pretty much inevitable since the C2D generation imo.

windows 8 to support arm based architectures
Thank goodness for that. Else the consumer would get properly shafted. Though I don't see any ARM powered performance rigs in the near future.

sigh

i should then most probably frame my x4 555be as its now become a relic . maybe i can resell it in 2060 for like R10 000 as a collectors item
