Bill Gates considering Microsoft return?

Microsoft

In a move that could mimic Steve Jobs and Larry Page, Bill Gates is considering a return to Microsoft as Chief Executive Officer according to “a well placed source.”

Fortune reported that the remarks came from “a prominent chief executive”. Gates left Microsoft to focus on philanthropic projects in mid 2008, though he retained the position as chairman of the board. He is also the company’s largest shareholder.

One potential reason for a comeback could be Steve Ballmer, the incumbent Microsoft CEO. Ballmer is not loved by investors, with one going so far as to call for his resignation after stating Ballmer was “stuck in the past.”

Another would be that Gates wants to guide the company through a time of great change as Microsoft readies itself for a push into the mobile space.
