Nokia getting support payments from Microsoft
The move from Symbian to Windows Phone mobile will be a tough time for Nokia, who are struggling to find their feet in the face of market share losses and stiff competition from rivals Samsung and Apple.
However Microsoft is supporting the Finnish mobile manufacturer in the form of quarterly “platform support payments”, the first of which came in at $250 million (R1.95 billion).
This payment was part of what Nokia says will be billions of dollars in support to ensure the success of the Windows Phone platform.
Nokia also noted that it pays Microsoft royalties on each phone and has guaranteed minimum commitments to the software giant, which it claims will also measure in billions of dollars.
Symbian phone sales are slowing faster than Nokia expected. The company hoped to sell 150 million more Symbian devices, after announcing the switch to Windows Phone, though it has now noted that it “no longer expects to reach that level.”
