Google planning free Dropbox competitor?
Internet search giant Google is preparing to launch a cloud storage service that will compete directly with Dropbox.
This is according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, which claims that Google is nearly ready to launch the service.
The service will be called Google Drive, and will function in much the same way as Dropbox. The program will create a virtual drive on a cloud server, then mirror that drive on your computer. Any files moved to the drive on your computer will be automatically synced with the virtual drive in the cloud.
Photos, videos, documents and other files will all be compatible with Google Drive, and can be accessed by a computer as well as Android based smartphones and tablets.
The service will be available to users within the next few weeks and will be free to most users, though there are no indications as to the amount of free storage Google will provide with Drive.
