Yahoo launches “Axis” web browser
Yahoo is getting into the browser game with a multi-platform web browser known as ‘Axis’.
The company has announced that there will be versions of Axis for the iPhone and iPad, as well as plug-ins for the desktop browsers Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.
Ethan Batraski, head of product for the Search Innovation Group at Yahoo, noted that the design goal of Axis is to eliminate the middle step between searching for information and ending up on the relevant web page.
The browser takes users directly from query to the web page rather than providing a range of links of potential page matches.
When users type a query into Axis, the browser provides them with a horizontal display of web page thumbnails. If thumbnails are not available, the browser will preview text from the page.
Users then click on this preview to go directly to the page.
