Apple, Android tablet shipment estimates up

Tablet shipment estimates have been raised by market researcher IDC, following strong demand for the mobile devices.
Higher than expected demand in the second half of 2012 has prompted IDC to raise their forecasts to 107.4 million units sold in 2012, up from 106.1 million.
The Apple iPad will account for 62.5 percent of shipments, up from 58.2 percent in 2011. Android’s market share is expected to slide from 38.7 percent in 2011, down to 36.5 percent.
IDC also revised its 2013 sales forecast to 142.8 million units, up from 137.4 million. Worldwide shipments for 2016 are now estimated to reach 222.1 million units.
“Demand for media tablets remains robust, and we see an increasing interest in the category from the commercial side,” said Tom Mainelli, research director of Mobile Connected Devices at IDC.
“We expect pending new products from major players, increasingly affordable mainstream devices, and a huge marketing blitz from Microsoft around Windows 8 to drive increased consumer interest in the category through the end of the year.”
