Critical infrastructure developer outsources job to China
A developer (only identified as Bob) working for an unnamed US critical infrastructure company was outsourcing his work to a Chinese sub-contractor while he spent his time goofing around on the Internet.
When the company noticed a series of activity on their main server originating from China, they called in telecommunications supplier Verizon to audit the system’s security.
Verizon discovered the ruse, noting that Bob had to send his physical security token to the Chinese devs so they could log into the system.
The quality of the work was so good that Bob was recognised as the company’s top programmer and considered an expert in C, C++, Perl, Java, Ruby, PHP, and Python.
Bob had also taken jobs at other companies and was completing work with a similar outsourcing scheme. Bob is no longer employed by the infrastructure company.
Having analysed his habits, Verizon was able to compile a schedule of Bob’s daily Internet activity:
- 09:00 – Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours. Watch cat videos
- 11:30 – Take lunch
- 13:00 – Ebay time
- 14:00 – Facebook updates, LinkedIn
- 16:30 – End-of-day update e-mail to management
- 17:00 – Go home
