Local hosting for under R1 per GB
Cybersmart surprised the local hosting market in December last year when it launched its free hosting service, offering all South Africans entry level hosting packages free of charge.
The free hosting was an initiative which Cybersmart MD Laurie Failkov hoped would reduce the cost of local bandwidth.
“We were very excited when CINX (Cape Town Internet Exchange) was opened in Cape Town as we thought we would get an opportunity to enter into settlement free peering arrangements with the content providers, and finally be on equal footing to the Johannesburg ISPs who have had JINX for many years,” said Fialkov.
“This is not the case. The content providers want to charge us for peering, some of them at a higher rate than what it costs to get bandwidth internationally – so we figured if we have to pay for our users to collect content from other providers it would be cheaper to create our own content which is exactly what we are doing.”
Low reseller bandwidth prices
Cybersmart is now also shaking up the reseller hosting market with packages which reduce the price of local hosting bandwidth to below R1 per GB. The high end reseller package (Gold) offers subscribers 5000 GB of bandwidth at R3899 per month, equating to under 80c per GB.
This price is well below other service providers which typically charge R25 or more per GB for local hosting bandwidth.
Failkov explained that he purchases symmetrical transmission capacity (hence the same amount of bandwidth up and down) for ADSL, and since ADSL is an asymmetric service he typically used far more downlink capacity than uplink capacity.
Instead of wasting this capacity, he is now using the spare bandwidth to offer affordable local hosting bandwidth to the market in their data centre in Cape Town.
