Telkom’s Centurion data centre experienced a network switch failure early on 18 May, which it said is currently impacting services.
“As a result of the failure, Internet and other online services are impacted. Telkom customer contact centres and shops are currently offline.”
For the duration of the outage, customers will not be able to complete transactions such as airtime and top-up purchases and bank payment transactions.
“Technicians are hard at work to restore full service,” said Jacqui O’Sullivan, head of group communication at Telkom.
“We apologise for the inconvenience our customers will be experiencing,” she said. “We understand this is a frustrating situation and we have prioritised this for urgent resolution.”
Telkom said it will issue an update and inform its customers when the service has been restored.
Update: Telkom issued a statement at 14:22 on Monday saying that the network switch failure has been repaired and service to customers has been fully restored.
“Telkom customer contact centres and shops are back online and payments to and via Telkom have also been restored,” the company said. “We apologise for the inconvenience this interruption has caused our customers.”
