IS limits impact of SEACOM downtime
Internet Solutions (IS) is one of the service providers in South Africa which has been the hardest hit by the lengthy SEACOM outage which started a week ago.
SEACOM surprised the market on Friday when it announced that the repair of the submarine cable may only be finalised by 22 July 2010. “The exogenous factors such as location, water depth, weather and spare parts needed make this cable outage very difficult to repair and a highly specialised vessel and technical crew is being used to carry out this work,” SEACOM said in a press statement.
In the same press statement SEACOM said that the deployment of restored capacity via other cable systems has progressed very well and that it was pleased with the positive support received from clients and suppliers alike.
ISPs finding additional capacity
MWEB announced late last week that “as of the very early hours on Friday morning we have restored all of our international bandwidth and we are running on full capacity once again.”
Good news is that IS has also managed to secure restoration bandwidth that has been stable since last week. Despite the fact that international consumer DSL and Velocity services are still routed on temporary alternate bandwidth, this solution seems to be stable.
“We do believe that the interim solution that IS currently has in place will be stable over the coming days and the only expected outage we can foresee, will be when we initiate the failover to the restored path,” IS said in its correspondence to its clients.
