Skype for Linux – Beta now available

Skype

Skype for Linux has moved from Alpha to Beta, and includes features which make the service easier to use.

“We have been focused on building a new experience that is in line with Skype’s ongoing transition from peer-to-peer to a modern cloud architecture,” said the company.

“We want to create a Linux version of Skype that is as feature rich as the existing Skype.”

The Skype for Linux update includes performance improvements and many requests from the Linux community:

  • Calling updates – Calls to mobiles and landlines with Skype credit can be made from Linux to Skype users on Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac.
  • Better collaboration – Linux users can view shared screens from other Skype desktop clients (Windows and Mac).
  • Usability improvements – Unity launcher shows the number of unread conversations. Online contacts include Away and Do Not Disturb statuses.
