Telkom fair use warning to uncapped LTE subscribers
Telkom has sent SMS notices to certain uncapped LTE subscribers to warn them their connections may be throttled.
It reminded subscribers that their uncapped LTE services are subject to an acceptable use policy (AUP).
The AUP has not been fully enforced, and Telkom said it will start implementing it from September.
Telkom’s plan to implement its AUP comes after subscribers complained they were getting slow speeds on Telkom’s LTE network.
Telkom said the most congested areas should have started seeing improvements from the beginning of August.
Telkom’s warning SMS
The warning SMS is shown below.
Dear Telkom LTE customer, our LTE uncapped services are governed by an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
Telkom reserves the right to apply restrictions if a customer’s behaviour is deemed to affect the experience of other LTE users on the network.
Please note that Telkom will start to implement the AUP from September 2016.
Your current usage puts you at risk to be impacted by the policy, which may lead to throttling. Go to http://telkom.site/AUP to view the AUP. T&Cs apply. Telkom Team.
Subscribers angry about mid-contract change
Subscribers who received the SMS have taken to the MyBroadband forums to voice their unhappiness.
Telkom is changing the way the service works in the middle of a 24-month contract, they argued.
The web page for Telkom’s uncapped LTE product summarises the AUP as follows:
- 50GB threshold for “bandwidth-intensive protocols”, which are throttled to 128kbps thereafter.
- Throttling after reaching 50GB threshold will occur during peak network periods, from 6pm to 12am.
- Subscribers may not provide network services from their account (for example, you may not use your account to operate as an FTP server).
Bandwidth-intensive protocols and applications were defined as BitTorrent, bulk automated downloads, and news servers (NNTP).
Telkom was asked under what circumstances the AUP will be enforced and how it will affect subscribers, but it did not respond.
