Vodacom ups its stake in iBurst
FMTech reports that Vodacom CEO Alan Knott-Craig confirmed that the cellular giant will increase its 10% stake in WBS to 24.9%.
One of the main benefits of the WBS stake is that Vodacom gets access to the company’s WiMax license and spectrum, something which many companies are looking for.
Only four operators – namely Telkom, Neotel, Sentech and iBurst – have been issued with WiMax spectrum. Telkom has already rolled out a WiMax network while Neotel and Sentech are in the process of trialing equipment for their own rollouts.
Vodacom previously announced that it will roll out a few hundred WiMax base stations to provide an ADSL replacement service to consumers.
Vodacom will roll out an 802.16e – or mobile WiMax – network.
