Since last week I have been getting regular weather updates from the MTN Network several times a day. These are not SMS messages, as they do not appear in my inbox, but rather remain on the standby screen until I choose to dismiss it.

I think it must have been a broadcasted message, as I have recently turned on this function on my TyTN to see what it does.

The latest one reads:

"Message from Network. 22 January 17:24 Cloudy at times with a 30% chance of thunderstorms."

Anybody else getting these as well?

CB Broadcast 900 , 40 .. etc cant remember what the CB channel is for weather.

That's correct. Here's my unofficial list of MTN CB Topics / Channels:

040: Weather
050: MTN Zone discount % (Supposed to be Area Info / Cell Info)
100: Cell Info with Y'ELLO BROADBAND (Recently moved from 050)
250: Cell Info without Y'ELLO BROADBAND
900: Tower Info
910: Antenna Info

Anybody know where you set the channel on a Nokia E51?
I am getting the MTNZONE %, but since I am on contract it does not help me much.
Would rather get weather or other info...

Ah, I figured it out. :)

On the Nokia E51, you enable Cell Broadcast under
Messaging | Options | Settings.

You then get a "Cell Broadcast" item under
Messaging | Options where you can select the channels you would like to subscribe to.

Has anyone in the highveld got a report that was not "PARTLY CLOUDY, 30% CHANCE OF AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS" in the past month? :)

Hi mountain_lion. The Nokia E51 looks like a fantastic phone. I have been waiting a long time for MTNSP shops to get stock of these phones, and it appears that it might be available shortly. May I ask you if you are happy with the E51? Any comments on this phone would be appreciated.

Slightly OT here, but why not...

Got mine from Nashua Mobile delivered to my office, free on MyCall100 :)

Very happy with the phone so far (been using it for a bit more than a week).
Only thing "missing" is a full keyboard, but for that you pay more and have to carry a bulkier device.

Been using VOIP on it with the Nokia SIP client to our corporate Asterix via wifi LAN as well as Fring for Skype calls via my home wifi LAN. Works fine.
VOIP via wifi is only really practical for outgoing calls since permanent wifi connection drains the battery very quickly (about one day). I have not tried VOIP via 3G yet.

There are many reviews of the E51 on the net; mostly favourable - I assume you have read those.

JAS, I did not get this phone as a media device, so it does not bother me, but I guess I should also mention that the camera on the E51 is not good at all (poor colour) and that the Realplayer media player is almost useless - stutters and jumps and just refuses to play some MP4's. It should be possible to fix these issues with a firmware update, so will have to wait and see what Nokia do... (emTube works fine for YouTube and .flv videos)

The features that I want to use, all work fine.
