Ever tried to install eMule just to find that you can't connect to any of the servers? Torrent speeds terrible? It's called "traffic analysis" or "bandwidth management". Boiled down to its evil roots, iBurst monitors all incoming and outgoing traffic and can pinpoint traffic destined for services like eMule, Ares or torrents through specific ports or packet sniffing. Its a crazy concept due to the fact that we are paying customers and what the hell should they care what we're doing with our paltry couple of gigs?

None the less they throttle or block all this traffic but there is a way to get round their deviousness! Download Tor, an application offers your traffic anonymity though their gateway scanners and best of all its free.

How does it work?
All your traffic gets encrypted and send to various servers across the globe via port 443 (this port use for SSL traffic like when you connect to a online banking site). SSL traffic is not monitored and is allowed to pass through the gateway unheeded. You can set all your favourite downloaders to use Tor when connecting under the Proxy settings of the application.

Where do I get it?
http://tor.eff.org
They have versions for Windows, Mac and Linux/Unix operating systems. The windows installer works very well and you even get a nice interface called Vidalia which interacts with Tor.

Quick Guide to settings up eMule to use Tor:
1. Download and install Tor
2. Download and install eMule
3. Once Tor is running and the Vidilia icon is green open eMule
4. In eMule click on "Options"
5. Select "Proxy" from the left and check "Enable proxy"
6. Set the proxy type to "socks 4a"
7. Set the host to "127.0.0.1"
8. Set the port to 9050
9. Click Ok
10. Connect, search and download to your heart's content

Are there any downsides
Well yes. The download speeds are slower than if you were connecting directly, but seeing that you can't connect at all I think this is a fair trade-off.

I've tested Tor with eMule, uTorrent and Ares and have gotten some good speeds. This solution will work with any Internet connection (ADSL,3G etc should I tell them too?)

Hope this helps:D

It should help with ANY shaping, unless the ISP is shaping SSL traffic which is highly unlikely!

Haha, this thread heading will sure get iBurst's attention so don't expect things to be as easy in the near future.:D

I haven't used Limewire in years but if it is capable of using a proxy for its downloads it should work fine. The Tor Windows installation includes Privoxy which can handle a normal http request and Tor itself which handles Socks4a requests. If Limewire can only use an http proxy the steps above are the same except the port must change to 8118 which is Privoxy's.

Well look, it is quite impossible to block it. I mean they are unable to monitor the contents of SSL packets, and they can' block them, so it is a catch 22 situation for them. This is similar to running a P2P client through a VPN, well pretty much same reslut, as all your traffic is encrypted, and not shaped.

Ah, sounds a lot like HTTPTunnel which unfortunately and weirdly got no results for me, here's hoping this turns out better! *scurries off to try*

Well I wouldn't say its impossible but the resources needed are phenomenal and with iBurst ever dwindling subscriber base I doubt they'll cough up the bucks :)

Not necessarily. They can't really shape SSL traffic now can they? We might be on to something here! :D

I'm downloading some videos now. It's not magic, but certainly better than without Tor. Getting about 15kB/s so far. Picking up speed as more sources connect.

Glad to know its working. Torrent will generally speed up due to more seeds being formed or joining.

This is how my torrent started. I'm now up to 25kB/s which is not bad all considering...

Well it's staying at a constant 12kB/s now with emule. I hope I'm doing everything right. Will you have to run Tor every time for this to work properly?

Yip I'm afraid you do. Tor is the connection client to the service.

Well its basically just a proxy. I used to use one for Limewire and it worked perfectly for whoever asked, got around 70KB on some good downloads.

Sounds like its just a step above a normal proxy that might die any second, thanks a lot for the link.

Hmmm keeps giving me
Mar 29 00:22:35:040 [Warning] fetch_from_buf_socks(): Your application (using socks4 on port 2710) is giving Tor only an IP address. Applications that do DNS resolves themselves may leak information. Consider using Socks4A (e.g. via privoxy or socat) instead. For more information, please see http://wiki.noreply.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#SOCKSAndDNS.

No Socks4a option on uTorrent or Limewire and Socks5 gives the same error.

there is another way to.here is a cut past

1.0 Finding free shiz

Right call me an idiot but some people seem to have no idea how Google works. Or in
some cases it appears people have never even met their prospective friend!

Right so, did you know you can easily use Google to download free music? Or maybe
even the latest Limewire PRO or maybe even PSP isos! Everything is out their. Simply
by the way Google works you have access to everything on the internet.

Google is constantly taking snapshots of webpages on the net, even those wierd and
wonderful, unseen corners of the net . . . When we search Google searches it's database
of snapshots and gives you what it deems to be the most relevant results. But they
may not be what you want. Here is an example of how to find some decent free music
using Google.

I dont know if i am allowed to post secrets to google searching for anything on the net and downloading it.But i do have the full article on how to get anythig you want on the net without a torrent or p2p network.
