Its a long shot, and i am looking everywhere, but maybe someone on here has an answer for me....

I am looking for pretty much the best opthamologist in the country. I need someone who is very up to date with current tech, since i need a transplant, and so far the only place that does it properly is in the States....i am avoiding it since i would have to sell other vital organs to get there.

The problem with specialists is they all tell you they are the best etc etc.

Any help appreciated

I know Dr John Hill has the latest LASIK machine; I don't know if he's as up to date with surgical procedures. I'd also recommend Dr Maske at the Cape Eye clinic.

thanks everyone!!
gonna give em a try and see if its viable!!!

Dr. Hill doesn't have the latest lasik machine and the Cape eye clinic has older machines which all the eye surgeons share on a certain day of the week.

The eye specialist with arguably the most experience is Professor Kruger of Tygervalley. He has his own wavefront laser machines and he trained many many surgeons in the UK in wavefront laser and ablation technology. (incidently he was the very first to offer lasik in South Africa many years ago!)
He has an impressive resume. Check him out. I think he's a member of the intraocular lens society.

Dr Hill doesn't share the cape eye clinic machines, afaik - he can do custom ablation, which the others can't.

Kruger was doing custom ablation long before Hill and the two of them do have their own machines, except Kruger has been doing it far longer. Hills machines were installed 5 to 7 years ago.

thanks everyone, have pretty much emailed all the ppl listed, i know what procedures i want/need and the equipment i want used. I am jsut trying to find if its available locally or if i need to go to the states....
Hopefully our guys are up with the times...

Hosehead, do you know if Prof Kruger has a website or a contact email address? I'm tired of arguing with Dr Hill, and I might give him a try since I think he's the only other opthalmologist with a wavefront laser.

Pm me, i have done extensive research in the subject (i am getting a transplant!!!).

I will give u the results of whom i think would be worth while going too..

Resurrecting this,
Went and saw Mark Deist. Exceptionally happy with him at the moment.
Am looking at getting ICL's in the not too distant future and will hopefully have a corrective vision free future.

I have had a few information requests on this so will prob blog on the procedure and results etc. Sucks though that medical aid is giving issues about paying for this...

Can't find the other thread about Prof Kruger, so I'll post here. I really need to vent.

I had LASIK with Prof Kruger just over 6 months ago, and I have to say that he was brilliant. No complications, everything's gone really well, and I'm really happy with the op and with Kruger.

But. The admin there is terrible. I've had so many problems - they cancel appointments at the last minute. They submitted things to med aid when I told them not to. They've made mistakes with the account. But the biggest issue that I'm STILL struggling with is that I paid the full amount up front, including meds needed on the day of the op. Cost almost R20,000 (but it was so worth it). But since then, every month, I get an account for R97.66 for part of the cost of the solar shields they give you to protect your eyes.

I've spoken to the person who takes the payment. I've spoken to the reception people. I spoke to one of the accounts people - and they all agree that it doesn't make sense to charge me part of the cost of the solar shields; that it should be included in the price I paid up front; and it's a mistake that they'll fix.

And every month, I get another account for R97.66.

I am so sick of it. I phoned them today, and apparently the manager left a note on my account saying that it was only an estimate for meds and I have to pay the extra amount. Nobody bothered to phone me to tell me this (aside from the fact that it's totally incorrect) and of course, the manager's not in today, so I couldn't argue with them. But I will... trust me, I will! But it's extra stress that I really don't need.

So in summary: Dr Kruger = brilliant; Dr Kruger's practice's admin = sucky.

If you love your health the just pay the amount. It is less than 0.5% of what it has cost you in total.

Do you just want to be right or do you want to do the right thing (for your own health)?
