Hi

I'm looking for free (local if possible) dynamic DNS that allows you to use your own/custom TLD (top level domain) name (like example.co.za) and not just a subdomain. It would be a bonus if the router can update the DDNS instead of running a client application on a computer.

So far I've found ZoneEdit that allows you to have a custom domain name with their DDNS and they also provide domain name management.
DynDNS is quite popular for DDNS. You can get a subdomain of dyndns.org for free, but unfortunately you have to pay like $28/yr to have a custom TLD.

I know my way with networking - so no need to explain :D I'm just looking for links/great sites/services. I'm using MyDomain.com to manage my .za.net domains that I have and I must say its interface looks much better than the ZoneEdit's DNS management interface.

Thanks in advance
Chris

since you seem to know your stuff, I won't bore you :)

I'd recommend afraid.freedns.org.

You can add as many domains as you want, but you're limited to 50 subdomains in total over all your domains. I think I'm currently over the limit, but it hasn't stopped me or warned me. I don't think they have the dyndns API to update your domain, but you can do so by visiting a url like http://freedns.afraid.org/dynamic/update.php?YOUR_UNIQUE_TOKEN_HERE

I currently use them with a co.za domain and run a script to update my domains when my ip changes.

A friend of mine suggested to use one of those free services where you just get a subdomain, like pada.dyndns.org and then I setup a CName on my registered pada.co.za domain to refer to the DDNS name.

eg. pada.co.za -- CName --> pada.dyndns.org -- A --> 196.123.123.123

If you need a local DDNS provider, you can use http://www.activedns.co.za/ to get a subdomain ( *.activedns.co.za ). ActiveDNS uses the same protocol as DynDNS. UNFORTUNATELY its NOT FREE, but still fairly cheap at R10p/m per domain.

Here's an OLD thread with regards to SA DDNS Providers: DYNAMIC DNS - .co.za.

Some ISPs also provide DDNS for their users, although some (if not all) aren't free (like WebAfrica @ R50p/m).

The best list of free DDNS providers that I'm aware of is here: DDNS

I think most of the ones listed in the thread are there, but a lot of others as well.
