Well.... I just read an article where it states that people who don't want to be tied into contracts can get a starter pack wich includes a USB I-Burst modem for R999 amongst other things..... I just got myself into a 2 year contract 2 months ago and got a USB modem for approx. R 2500 and I have to pay it over 2 years.... This is B.S. to say the least, if I had the option to pay R999 I would've done that, how will this be adjusted?!

A USB or Express modem costs R20/month over the contract period. You thus only 'pay' R480 for the modem when on contract.

A desktop modem costs R40/month over the contract period. You thus only 'pay' R960 for the modem when on contract.

So you're paying R480 for the modem. This is substantially less than the R999 on pre-paid.

Or are you saying we should *increase* your monthly subscription to get it in line?

Nope, I am saying if you give me an option to exit out of my contract and go on month to month I will pay the R999 rather and not be tied in?

Ouch, FAIL! lol.

Besides, you can't blame iBurst for releasing a new package... thats like buying a car on credit and then demanding a new one because a month after you bought it they did a facelift, lol!

Isn't that like buying 2 litres of milk and moaning to Checkers the next day when it comes on special?

Not quite, it just means that new customers will receive the same modem I bought 2 months ago and tied myself to my own doom for 2 years, for 60% less 2 months later.... That's not treating customers fairly, no matter which ever way you look at it.

So if i want to get a 2nd Iburst modem (USB one).

I can pay it upfront ?? R999 (then link the 2nd modem to my Iburst acc) ??

Good question, in other words,

If I have a Desktop PC at home and a Laptop on the road, can I link my Desktop modem and Prepaid USB modem to my iBurst account?

Or does the Prepaid USB modem work only for prepaid vouchers?

Yahnowellfine Zodiak, I don't know how you can possible expect iBurst to stand up for your actions.

We bought our PCMCIA modems for about R2000 (or R2500?) waaaaay back without a contract. But that was an intentional decision ie to pay upfront for the hardware without being locked in a contract. 30 day notice required.

If iBurst were to (kind of what you say) give 6 or 12 month's notice of specials coming up, how do you think will they survive?

Bandwidth prices are coming down and to a lesser extend the cost of hardware. So total cost of Internet access is dropping. You have two options:
- you can go without Internet access and wait till it is much cheaper than now, or
- you can have access now at more than what it's going to cost in the future :-)

My wish list: I just hope the actual cost of packages will be dropped vs getting switched (automatically) to a higher bandwidth package of the same amount. The reason being that in the past they did it automatically, then we end up with way too much bandwidth AND the effort to switch packages manually.

Do not get too exited about this offer, tried to get the prepaid bundle at Menlyn shopping center only to be told the it is not available, expecting stock on monday.

What irritates me is that the salesperson is not aware that this special is advertised on iburst.co.za.

just a quick question...
Would iBurst be selling these USB modems for contract customers as well, or is the modem just for the prepaid package?

Answer I got from iBurst support if you can use the prepaid usb with m2m contract.

Unfortunately at this point in time the pre-paid devices are unable to
be linked up to any contracts . Reason being is that those modems are
designed specifically just for pre-paid . Hopefully we are able to in
the nearest future but for now we won't be able to .If you have any
queries please feel free to contact me

Well, thanks for answering my question.

Does the Prepaid USB modem work only for prepaid vouchers?

Currently you can't buy a pre-paid modem and then convert it to a new contract (credit vetting, etc. comes into play) but I can't see any reason why you cannot link a "pre-paid" modem onto your existing contract as the second modem.

Let me check.

Hi Jannie

Thats what i want to do.

I've got a Desktop modem which i normally leave at work (require external power) --> Giga Contract

I would like to buy a 2nd modem (USB one) to use with my Laptop for mobility. USB draws power from the laptop. --> Want to addon as my 2nd modem on my Giga

Can this be done?? will the modem price still be R999, and can i buy the modem from any of the Iburst / Vodacom stores??

Thanks

Napalm

Hi guys.

Sorry, did the checking and pre-paid modems will not work on a standard account.

So, no to getting a pre-paid and then linking the USB device to your existing account.

Thanks for the query. Good one.

So... those loyal customers why have been on contract for years, or those who have been on the month-to-month package for all these years STILL have to pay R2000 + should we wish to purchace a 2nd mondem? forgive me, but thats sick... I've never been told that I can't buy a cell phone cash and use it on my contract, in fact I did that just the other day. What's the deal? A modem is a modem is a modem, does the same thing!

Ye, why can't we buy these R999 modems and use it on a Existing Contract as a 2nd modem.

Are these USB modems different from the R2000 USB modems??

Doesn't sound right.

There is no difference in the device. They are allocated to pre-paid only and can thus only be used for that purpose.
