Less than a week ago I moved from an Amobia 2mbps capped connection to a 2mbps uncapped connection. I did this after I realized that in the 23 months since I got Amobia I spent R49,000 in total on 490GB of traffic in connection fees and top ups (R89/GB).

I have noticed emails from my ISP indicating by how much I have exceeded my 3 day threshold so I decided to ask others to please give me an indication of the caps on uncapped they get. What I would like to know is 1) the connection speed, 2) the monthly cap (or AUP threshold), 3) the effective speed you get when you adhere to that cap and 4) the % the effective speed is of the marketed speed.

In my case Amobia has the following caps on uncapped :

Package Speed3day capEffective Speed% of real speed
307210GB38412.5
20487GB27013.1
10244GB15415
3842GB7720

Thus for Amobia you get best value for money if you take there 384kbps uncapped package since you can use up to 20% (77kbps) of your full speed before you get into trouble.

What caps are there on other uncapped packages? I am getting ADSL soon and want to know where I can flat line my connection with no worries.

Should be : What caps are their on other uncapped packages?

Fixed it.

Sorry, I still don't get it. How can there be ANY "cap" on an uncapped product?

(and it should read "What caps are there on other uncapped packages?")

Axxess Express or Mweb business ...... safest bets I reckon.

Thanks - yes there are caps on uncapped. Everyone has them except Mweb it seems. If you know of an ISP with capped uncapped products please list them here so that I can avoid them.

yes other guys like axxess will slowly throttle you as you sleep but really only in South Africa can a person ask what caps are on a uncapped line. These ISP treat us like idiots with their rollover thresholds. Its not our fault they can't keep up with our demand, but we punished anyway.
Mweb and a few other will shape your bandwidth so technically you uncapped but you'll find certain ports or protocols are slower, like if you downloading torrents they won't run so healthy.Supposedly only during peak hours. Mweb do claim their business package is uncapped and unshaped, so theoretically it should be true uncapped open the tap and let it pour downloading.
So that's what you want to look for Uncapped and unshaped accounts. Plus if you spending R49,000 that's ~ 2000 a month. So I guess a with 512K Mweb business account you'll save almost R1000.
But seriously only 490GB I am sorry that's pretty bleak for 23 months of downloading check out axxess top users on 384K line although I suspect they get 4mb after hours. They getting if axxess is to be believed 700+gig a month.

Thanks GeforceD - my initial connection costs (wireless equipment) was R2000 and I factored that into the price. I also paid a month connection fee of R300 that gave me 2GB to begin with. I am trying to make up for that costs now on the uncapped connection but they do not seem to happy with my downloading habits. In the week since I got it I will have done about 60GB - which is when IS starts to throttle accounts anyway.

Perhaps I should just let it run until they throttle me and then... well just keep on running it :p

Well Garyvdh some Isp's are very naughty they claim they offer uncapped services. But what they mean is they not going to stop or charge you extra for download over a certain limit, but what they do is they start to limit your bandwidth as you continue downloading your speeds will be dailed down.
This is from axxess (axxess of evil I should think)
The Uncapped Express service is best suited to users that require unrestricted but affordable ADSL access. People who don't want to be restrained by monthly downloading caps...
A 10 day rolling threshold applies to this account - This means when you use more than the threshold amount during a 10 day period, your line speed will be lowered but not disconnected.

This restriction only applies on weekdays from 8am to 8pm.

You will still have the FULL line speed after 8pm on weekdays and the weekend. This means that if you have a 4Mb/s line, you will get 4Mb/s speed, even if you only have a 384Kbps account!
...
After hour usage still counts to your daytime 10 Day Rolling Threshold. So if you used more than your 10 Day Rolling Threshold then your speed will be throttled during the day time until your usage falls within the 10 Day Rolling Threshold. Refer to the table below for threshold and speed limits. This treshold will not reset on the 1st of the month.
...
The speed will be limited to whatever is the lowest - your line speed or the account speed. Ex. 1024K account on 384K line = 384k download speed, 512K account on 4096K line = 512K download speed.
Blah blah blah... i am sure you get the idea now.

Amobia apparently doesn't throttle you if you exceed your threshold... yet. They simply send you an email politely requesting that you dial it down a notch. I don't have personal experience of this though.

Sorry... I still don't think these accounts are anywhere close to uncapped. I think you guys have been taken for a ride! :D

Uncapped is what I do every month :p

I discovered Amobia a few days ago and am considering switching to them from MWEB 384 uncapped. R650 a month for 2mbps uncapped sounds great.

By 'effective speed', are you saying that the 3mbps account only runs at 384kbps permanently or that that's what the speed decreases to if you exceed 10gb in 3 days? 10gb per 3 days seem very reasonable if the latter option is correct.

What's the ping like? Service? Any info would be appreciated.. Their website doesn't have much on it.

They never limit your speed and their latency is excellent. They do send out emails that complain if your usage is too high. This is what made me switch to Mweb and even with close to 500GB a month I still did not get any complaints from Mweb.

But, if you are looking for a WISP nothing comes close to Amobia - they are excellent, professional and a company worth supporting.

I'll put question differently: after how many letters, they shut service to customer?

Just interesting, what happens if you will continue NOT adhering to their criteria? Lose tech support from them due to their frustration, maybe? ;)
