It's one of those thread.

What & where can I buy for R6K budget?
I just want :
  • Motherboard
  • CPU
  • Graphics card
  • RAM (preferable at least 4GB)
  • Good Tower and a good PSU (Coolmaster or something)
I will sort out other components.
I want something "powerful" that I can game with.
I intend installing UBUNTU and Win7 - all 64 Bit.

I want to do this ASAP before I spend the money on something else. :)

Argh, dont think you can fit all that into R6k and get a 'powerful' gaming machine. Mid range is possible though, something like Athlon quad core, cheapy mobo, 4gb ddr3 ram, 5770, case (sub R800) and 450W PSU. Though even that gets to about R6250 (rough figures).
Intel route you'll get a dual core with hyper threading at best.

Yeah you might struggle to do all of that on R6k. R7k should be fine.

Perhaps buy the components that seldomly fail i.e. CPU/RAM/PSU as second-hand? You could get stuff that is still under warranty. Second-hand mid-high end graphics card will give you excellent bang for buck.

ATI has never been a good choice for linux users. I hear things are changing though so maybe do a bit of research. If it was not for ATIs poor linux support I would have not purchased my last nVidia card.

AMD socket AM3 Phenom2 x4, Quad-core 945 (3.0Ghz) R1561.23

Asus M4A88TD-M Evo/USB3 AMD880G AM3 Dual Channel DDR3 CrossFireX R1298.30

Force3D Radeon HD 5750 1GB DDR5 PCI-E 2.0 R1298.30

Corsair XMS3 TW3X4G1333C9A 2x2GB DDR3-1333 1.5v CL9 R1298.30

Coolermaster RC-310-BKN1 Elite 310 Case - Black with Blue Highlight
R417.17

Coolermaster EXTREME POWER PLUS 550W PSU R642.00

Total: R6515.30

Slightly over budget but worth it. If you really wanna save somewhere you can get this board if you dont care about sata3 or usb3:

ECS A790GXM-AD3 AM3 DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 R940.91

Which will allow you to get this graphics card:

Force3D ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 R1671.97

and if even that is too expensive you can drop the cpu to this:

AMD Socket AM3 Quad-core Athlonx4 635 2.9GHz R1113.55

Huh? I've not heard of problems running linux with 5000 series cards. In fact, have read several benchmarks and performance is comparable to windows. Although you do need 9.11 drivers though (ATI is currently on 10.6 iirc).

Have a look at my thread. You dont need a HDD and DVD? soo it'll bring it to around your 6k mark..
You could also look at the Phenom II x2 555BE and buy an mobo that has a core unlock feature?
Read this article http://www.anandtech.com/show/2927 And i'm sure you'll end up with a quad core at almost half the price :) Have a friend who did it.
So
P2 555BE @ R1,076.68
Asus M4A87TD @ R1,094.81
Corsair 2x2GB @ R1,134.69
Force3D 5770 1GB @ R1,448.87

Now power supplies:
Corsair CX400w @ R503.90 Should do the job, but if you wanna be safe and keep the unit for your next build (assuming you go bigger and better)
OR
OCZ StealthXStream 500W @ R658.58 (i selected this one for the total price)
Sub total: R5,413.63
Leaving you some cash for a case.
Maybe a raidmax skyline @ R688.79?
I like the look of this case, but go forth and choose they case :)

EDIT: Qwik beat me to it.. haha But prices are from rebeltech, which are usually cheaper than prophecy thats why the same parts i have listed cost a little less.. Note prophecy wont charge you delivery, but rebel will

True but thats more for the first 555's, the newer ones are x4's with 2 cores disabled. It just depends on your luck really..

Personally I prefer AMD chipset motherboards - NVidia dont make many motherboard chipsets anymore. Besides that, I got 4 GB of DDR3-2000 memory for about R1200, R1000 for 2GB sounds like a rip off, even if it is Corsair. Any of these memory kits would be fine. I own the last one (very happy with it).

I'd recommend this motherboard. Slightly more expensive, but worth it.

I'd also think about downgrading your CPU to an Athlon II X4 or a Phenom II X2. More expensive CPUs just dont provide a linear performance gain, and as mentioned PII X2's can be unlocked to X4s.

I'd spend a few extra hundred bucks on a better mobo.

Why though?
No offence heita_hola, but he seems to think Coolmaster is a brand... Can't imagine he's going to be over-clocking so what's the point? The board has 4 ram slots and is DDR3 so it's still upgradeable. SLI and Cross-fire is just not worth it...

Not criticizing, I just want to understand why there's so much emphasis on a powerful mobo for people who don't over-clock and never use the high-end features

It's an nvidia chipset board.

Bleh.

Ehm... It's R1000 for 4GB... You'll see it's 2x2GB
I'm not a fan of performance ram either - the performance gain just doesn't make up for the price difference

Oh sorry, I thought the quoted price was for 2 x 1 GB. Yeah I dont believe in performance memory either. I think paying R1000 for 4GB is fair, anything more is a rip.

OP, how important is gaming to you? Just want to work out how much is worth spending on a GPU, to you. I bought a machine with an Athlon II X4, 4GB DDR3, and a Radeon 5770, very happy with it.

I haven't gamed in a long time. I suppose I might have to stretch my budget quite a bit to R9K.
I can't compromise on any of the components I mentioned.

I got some quotation:
Graphics card
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.28GB 320bit DDR5 DX11 Graphics Card = R3500

CPU
AMD Phenom II X4 965, 8MB, AM2+, 3.4GHZ L2 Cache Quad Core = R1800

MOBO
AMD 785G Chipset Black Series DDR3 Motherboard = R1500

RAM
4GB = R1000

PSU
Coolermaster EXTREME POWER PLUS 550W PSU = R700

Total = just under R9000

Got it from this other guy.
