Cape Town - Mystery surrounds the murder of a young resident of the idyllic Boland town of Franschhoek on Wednesday morning.

Very little information was available about the murder of Chanel du Toit, 28, only a few hours after her husband, Johan, had left for the Karoo in the early hours of the morning.

A police spokesperson said it was still unclear how she had been murdered. There was no sign of forced entry and it looked as if only her rings and her cellphone had been stolen. Her body was still in the bedroom.

Chanel's body was found at about 08:15 in their Cape Dutch home in Uitkyk Street by her mother-in-law, Ronelle Kitshoff-Du Toit.

When reporters arrived at the murder scene, a devastated Johan du Toit came walking across the lawn of their home, which was situated close to the Dieu Donné restaurant. His eyes were red from crying.

He didn't want to comment about what had happened.

"We are leaving it in the hands of the police. I might comment later," he said.

According to Constable Marize Papier, a spokesperson for the Franschhoek police, Du Toit last saw his wife alive at about 02:00, shortly before he left the house for the Karoo.

Initial investigations indicated that there was no forced entry.

"At this stage, it looks as if only her rings and cellphone were stolen," she added.

When asked how Chanel was murdered, Papier answered: "It is still part of the forensic investigation. It is unclear how she was murdered. I don't know if there were any wounds on the body."

Du Toit was alone at home at the time of the incident.

Why?

Family and friends would not talk to the media on Wednesday. "We don't want to answer any questions now. We still don't know much about what happened," said a family member from Pretoria, where Chanel was originally from.

Enquiries were also made at Glenwood wine estate near Franschhoek, where she had worked, but no one wanted to answer questions there either.

Shocked friends wrote messages of sympathy on Chanel's profile on the social networking site Facebook. "Life is so unfair. I don't understand it at all. My thoughts and prayers are at all times with you Du Toits."

"Why? Jesus has another angel. Chanel, we will miss you very much."

Don't worry... The Happy Happy Optimists Club will be along shortly to tell us that this has nothing to do with the World Cup! :D

Why would this have anything to do with the world cup?

i think Gary's just pulling your legs folks....

at least the happy optimists club were proved mostly right this time around.... and the sad planks either have egg on their faces, or they're still trying to convince us that nobody came!

Off topic: But all this thread needs is for Horatio Caine to say something corny and then the theme music starts with scream...

My money is on someone she knew. How far is "the Karoo" from this town?

I take it Franschoek is usually peaceful area because this is run of the mill stuff elsewhere in the country.

Franschoek is in the Western Cape. Not too far - why?

Just wondering how the hubby could leave for the karoo at 2am and be back around when the reporters pitched up. Especially considering the body being discovered at about 8 am...

also the karoo trip is a very convenient alibi for the husband.

Does not mean he made it to the karoo, I'm sure he would have received a phone call from his mother in law after she found the body and turned around.

As far as I have the facts, he called his wife and when she did not answer, he called his mother to go to the house and investigate (odd if you ask me, because the first time I call someone and they do not answer, I do not immediately raise the alarm - they may simply be unable to answer for a variety of reasons). His mother found the victim and he then returned home.

The article says he was there when reporters turned up so I imagine they came quite a while after the body was found and/or when SAPS was there.

I read somewhere that he was on his way to Springbok. No idea how far that is from Franschoek.

Sounds dodgey, but truth is sometimes stranger than fiction...

It reads like a Midsommer Murders episode in South Africa. My money would be on the husband too.

Well, let's see what the SAPS investigation uncovers. Who knows ?

I am not buying his story, he knows something. It must have been him or maybe he arranged for someone to handle the wife, and when it was time, he conveniently left for Springbok a 2 am.

Why ask the mother to check on her...very fishy :(
