Hi there

Apart from terribly low download speeds at times, I am experiencing an even more frustrating problem since I switched to the 4 Mbps uncapped MWEB account. When my MAC needs to do some updating is when I notice these problems. This type of download tends to stop, usually long before the 100 MB mark is reached. All that happens after this point is that the time remaining counter keeps on increasing.

Today I needed to do a 244.4 MB update. At 64 MB, no more data was received at all. The time to completion counter kept on increasing and I cancelled the operation when there were 37 hours remaining for the download to complete.

Anybody else on the 4 Mbps uncapped MWEB account encountered similar problems? Is there perhaps something I'm not doing correctly? I cannot recall having this issue when I was still with my previous service provider.

Any help in correcting this issue would be appreciated.

Regards

Send me your details as well please. It will help us get to the bottom of this.

MWEB Operations - I have at least 5 clients, in various suburbs around Cape Town, who experience timeouts/false "finishes" for the majority of their downloads.
None had these issues before switching to MWEB uncapped - 3 were even on MWEB capped before.

Based on the circumstances, and the numerous similar posts on the forum, I'm quite certain that this has little-to-nothing to do with individual accounts, and more to do with the quality of the MWEB uncapped accounts/network/settings/etc etc.

MWeb Ops - would appreciate if you could investigate before I have to dissuade even more clients from using the service.

Thanks

ill take good bet that most such cases are CT related. i'll even throw in IPC/network congestion in that areas, 'grid' seems fine here in gauteng afaik and looking at my speeds.

Hi Dean
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Please could you inbox me your contact details and I will arrange with someone to follow up with you to discuss the specifics of the problems your clients are experiencing and do a full investigation.

Wow I'm glad someone is having the same issue. Thought I was the only one. Using an mweb capped account / telkom account solved the issue so it's definitely an uncapped thing. Mweb need to investigate this asap.

I experienced this as well when first using mweb. I just used a download manager and problem solved.

Yes, download managers solve the issue but I still struggle with Steam and OS X's Softwate Update. Just get random failures.

Details have been sent, thanks MWEB Ops.

We are down here in Stanger, KZN and i had the same issue when downloading small files on http, although using a download manager does make it stop however it doesn't solve the problem fully. There is something going on for sure with their shaping and you guys feel it too. This is also on a business line too.

I will not be sending our email details as its a more common problem as stated above.

Will wait for some feedback in this thread.

Cheers

I seriously used to hate the issue. Happened to my brother and myself so not pc related. But even when using a download manager manager it is still visible that the download stops then starts then stops then starts.

@burn We have recieved your details thanks. It would help a lot if those of you experiencing this problem could provide us with some current examples of what you're describing so that we can try and replicate and isolate the issue. Please provide as much detail as possible - source and names of files and approximate time the download was attempted.

MWeb Operations - it affects all downloads.
Sorry for the lack of proper detail, I haven't had much time around here this weekend.

This affects all HTTP downloads. I'm not sure about other downloads, as I haven't tested them, but trying to download firefox, thunderbird, VLC.
I've tried both in the day at clients, and at night at friends who all have MWeb uncapped and I've replicated the problem at all times, in Constantia and Sea Point, Cape Town (day in Constantia, day and night in Sea Point).

Sure, using a download manager helps, but I'm not going to lie - even downloading a download manager can prove tough.

VLC (as far as I know) is about 19MB, it kept stopping between 12 and 13MB.
Firefox and Thunderbird similar cases - got maybe 50 - 80% of the way and then just stopped as if it was complete - obviously the file sizes are wrong though as it doesn't finish downloading the full file.

I'm glad that we finally have a thread about this, in the open, and hopefully it can be resolved in the open. Many solutions get lost when they're moved to PM, I'm sure due to the nature of this thread and it's widespread interest, forumites would appreciate to hear how things are going each step of the way.

That's it right there. The browser just stops the download as if that's all there is, but if you try run the file obviously since it's incomplete it's corrupt.

why don't you guys do a tracert to which file you are downloading and post it ?

strart > run > cmd >

tracert <then host where the file is here>

(example: tracert www.google.com)

press enter, then wait till it's done, select it, copy and past here :)

Hi Dean

I've just tested with VLC myself and was able to replicate what you're describing. As a starting point I've passed this on to our network engineers for comment. I'm quite happy for us to discuss the issue here but as you know the devil is often in the detail so it would really be helpful if anyone could provide us with more examples of affected content as requested above.

Well, your replication is exactly where the problem lies.
As I mentioned - I tried Firefox (getfirefox.com), Thunderbird (getThunderbird.com) and VLC (videolan.org i think).
All files tried in Sea Point and Constantia, Cape Town.

Not sure what other details would be pertinent, if there's something in particular that you need, let me know and I'll furnish.

sounds like a faulty cache server with imcomplete files on it....

But then why does a download manager fix it? also retrying sometimes works. ImgBurn I had to download twice.
