So Merc and Toyota both make 2l V4 sedans in the same category, why does one cost R400 000 the other R250 000? They made from practically the same components. Well i'll let you answer that one.
Apple is just a superior product in terms of everyday usability. Its quick, easy to navigate and pretty much everything you need works as you turn it on. At home we have one MBP, one macbook and an iPad, all have their own uses but they all do them well. If I needed to code or game then Mac would be my last choice but as a product guaranteed to work consistently for some time Mac is unparalleled.
Just as an example my uncle had a 2007 iMac which he gave to my cousin(his daughter) when he wanted the newer version(he is that rich uncle
) anyway my cousin is using that computer for all her matric work and general facebooking, photo uploading, movie downloading stuff perfectly. It is still extremely quick and she will probably use it for the next 2 to 3 years, my PC's that i recently replaced were 5 years old but completely unusable. The memory degraded and it became slow and painful. Did I mention no drivers or viruses for mac?

That wouldn't surprise me but you don't NEED to goto Dell in order to have a decent desktop.
EDIT: How does one get to the US version of the website, it keeps forcing me back to the ZA one.

My argument is a lot of Mac users are so blinkered into believing there is only one computer out there and it must have an Apple logo that they fail to see how much money they're pissing against the wall/into SJ's wallet.

Look, I love my MBP, and I truly dislike windows. But even I will tell you that you can do all of that perfectly in Windows too.
What's wrong with a Mac for coding?
My mom's 5 odd year old PC with Windows XP is still perfectly usable, albeit low on disc space. And she loves clicking on all the pretty smileys and cute dancing bears and downloading free screensavers...
No drivers? Are you serious? Try installing an older version of OSX, say Tiger, on your brand new MBP - you'll quickly learn just how much OSX also needs drivers. You just happen to get the ones you need with your Mac laptop. Just like any other laptop.
Yes, but we're comparing apples to apples here. A Mac Pro is not your average desktop. It's not even your average high-end desktop. If you want a high-end brand name workstation, you're going to pay big money, no matter what.

OK I know you can do it on a windows machine, at least I would hope so. Point was that it is not a new machine and that everything works fine on it, no hardware failures etc.
I just heard its difficult to code on a Mac, I'm not into it so I wouldn't know much about coding.
My 6 year old machine was fine for basic tasks like browsing etc but throw Google sketchup into the mix and it failed, in fact any application that needed the slightest bit of RAM or processing power was k@k, my machines weren't great, i'll admit that but even then.
From my experience i haven't had to install a single driver on my mac. Plugged my printer in and it worked, where as on windows I had to install a driver and then had to update it not to far back. It may just have been my printer but again, this is from my personal experience comparing xp and OSX.
You can not argue the virus part though.

No viruses on linux either. Both of them share a tiny percentage of the desktop market, do I think theres a link there? Yes I do.

Have been through this before. This is really old. Everyone knows (with the exception of fanbois) that Macs are way over priced for what is in them. Entry level hardware sugar coated to the extreme. Not only do Apple over charge for the mundane hardware, they only guarantee said hardware for ONE YEAR. Any PC comes with 3 -5 years on the major parts... If you buy from reputable dealers.
What this comparison does not point out, is that Apple hardware is not so high-end after all.
The motherboards are made by.... ASUS for the high end machines and... wait for it... Foxconn for the entry level machines. Nothing wrong with ASUS. But Foxconn... kind of on the same level as MSI. Any PC bilder knows there is only ASUS & Gigabyte! Guess they got it half right.
The not so Superdrive is made my Pioneer, Hitachi etc. No Samasung or LG. Guess Samsung and LG could not give Apple the same deal as the others. It's not a secret though, that Samsung and LG drives are among the best.
The hard drives are made by Hitachi. No WD or Seagate, who are rated as the two leading manufacturers worldwide.
Graphics cards are very much entry level. Not built for gaming at all. They equate to the affordable versions running on the G8400M G9400M & GT120M ... all of which are the same card which has been rebranded 3 times - not much of an upgrade if buying a new i-mac. The high end machines run on the ATI 4870 cards - whoopdeeedoo! PS The M stands for Micro format. ie. Laptop graphic cards. Offering lower performance than the standard PC desktop GT variety- due to micro format capabilities.
The LCD displays... Now that is a joke. They are hopping between arb manufacturers because of a lack of consistancy issues with regard to stability (the dead pixel epidemic that plagued the first i-macs and the DOA issue of the first 24" i-macs comes to mind)
All that aside, they have a brilliant OS. One that works well on any entry level PC. That is the one thing Apple did perfect. But, they cannot make money selling their OS, so, they compensate by over-inflating their sugar coated hardware. After all, any fanboi will look at the exterior and say 'It only makes sense'
Thing is... Not being able to upgrade your sugar coated hardware does not make sense. Having to send this eye candy to a Mac shop to be repaired and have to pay unearthly repair costs... does not make sense. What manufacturer in their right mind solders a processor to the motherboard. Hmmm... One who realises that if either fail, you pay for both. One who realises that if the processor was in a socket, you would be able to upgrade. They do not want you saving any amounts of cash that could come their way. That just would not make sense!
Good OS... Loving it, good exterior design... but pulling the wool over your eyes in terms of hardware superiority. An i-mac is just an average decent laptop inside of an LCD display.
Don't get me wrong. Apple make good products. But price them to the extreme!!! ie. You are not getting real value for money in terms of hardware specs. They have just found a way to wrap mundane hardware in a casing that says" 'It just makes sense" I use OSX 80% of the time. Just would never fall for the hardware no matter how cool it looks. My PC tower sits behind my 24" screen. So I never see or hear it.

Have you seen the Cinema displays up close and personal. 30" LED backlight IPS screen. Its a good screen. 400 posts up

Well bad wording, it didn't degrade it became insufficient over time.

Surely this is easily fixed by just adding more? My Mac Mini's 512MB also became insufficient - same thing.

Sure the Mac Pro is damn expensive. It's a pro machine, not for consumers. If you're using software that costs thousands of dollars you might as well get a great machine.
If you look at the iMac and MacBooks, you'll see they give great value for what they are.
