A sister of Schabir Shaik and her friend are in shock after being robbed of more than R200 000 in jewellery in Durban on Tuesday.

Rehana Valiallah and her friend, Westville resident Rukshana Bhabha, and Bhabha's father, Ahmad, 75, had just parked at the Standard Bank Centre parking lot, near the Musgrave Centre, at 10am when they were held up and robbed.

"Rehana and I share a vault box and were returning some jewellery. We had taken it out last week to have it weighed and pay taxes on it," said Bhabha.

A black BMW coupe with a GP registration drove past the trio as they walked along the third floor of the parkade. Bhabha noted that the two men in the BMW "turned and looked at them" as they drove past.

"The car returned as we continued to walk to the bank. Two men got out of the car and approached us carrying guns. They fired one shot in the air," Bhabha said.

"One of them started hitting my dad with the butt of the gun, while the other came for me and Rehana and grabbed our handbags.

"My dad bled profusely and had to have eight stitches to his head. The jewellery belonged to Rehana and me. We carried it in our handbags and it was worth about R250 000."

The two women screamed for help, but their cries went unanswered as the security guard was apparently not at his post. The two men fled.

"We almost lost my dad because it would have been so easy for them to shoot. The incident left us very traumatised," said Bhabha.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said a case of robbery was being investigated. There have been no arrests.

Call me a skeptic but this story smells.
 
This story tries to tug on too many heart strings at once..

Who in their right minds walks around with a quarter of a million rands worth of jewellery and doesn't alert the bank that they'll be arriving at x time and please have a security detail ready....
 
Yeah quite odd, how did the robbers know they had so much jewellery on them. If this happened while they were walking out of the bank I could it understand it.

On what planet will that happen? You're saying the bank would have sent people out to meet them and escort them into the bank? I think not!!!

You're kidding? Maybe that's how they got robbed.

A crook's family getting robbed, haha.
 
I'm assuming the 5 star rating on the thread has nothing to do with the quality of the thread but rather the fact that people are happy the Shaiks have been robbed?

Well since I am by no means religious .... is there a rule/law/regulation somewhere that Muslims may not offer and/or pay bribes to people or act in a corrupt manner ?

If you bank with the International Bank Vaults at Gateway thats EXACTLY what happens....

It sounded like you referred to "the bank" as a generic term.

My apologies.

Since I do not pay or take bribes, I am not a woman of such means that I need a vault for my valuables ;)
 
Frankly, anyone who carries 1/4 Mil worth of jewelry in this country without an armed guard deserves to get robbed.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer family.
