Since this morning @ about 08h10, Port 110 is no longer accessible.

I can Telnet port 587 for SMTP and switching over to a backup NeoSnail connection allows a connection to Port 110.

I know that it shouldn't make a difference, but I've tried disabling Protected Access which doesn't help.

A call to MWeb 'Support' is a complete waste of time, because I'm told that their is no network problem, nothing is blocked and to connect a laptop directly to the router. What kind of advice is this?!? Nothing has changed, all was working until 08h10 then suddenly Port 110 is no longer available and it works from a NeoTel network. The 'Support Consultant' doesn't have the ability to try to Telnet to anything because 'Their system is secured'.

Dear MWeb for the love of all that is holy, you are driving me mental!?! Can I please have one day, just one day where there isn't some kind of failure?!? Please tell me what must I do now to fix this problem?!?

Unfortunately It would cost too much to employ a call center filled with competent staff. This isn't just at mweb though, its throughout SA. Worst call center IMO is SARS, then try getting assistance with the SARS website!!! vodacom is just behind them though (in my experience) But generally this is the case.

Hi MWEB Operations,

Can you please state here on the forum why you are blocking ports? I would really like to know why you are blocking port 80?

I cannot think what the advantage is for an ISP to block port 80. For me as a developer it makes testing my stuff a pain, but a quick workaround is possible. But still, why the port blocking?

Thanks

Thanks for the offer MWeb Operations, but no need....Just switched back from NeoSnail to ADSL & Port 110 is once again accessible. Not sure how it fixed itself, but it did.

Have a look in your MWEB control panel, you can disable that.

If you misconfigure your router, or your router has a firmware issue, someone from outside may be able to access and modify the settings, or steal your username & password.

Yeah, I know I am not MWEB Ops, but ...

Thanks Valerion, I will have a look at it tonight. This sounds actually like a nice feature if they implemented it like that.

Hi zamicro

Protected Access is highly recommended for your own online safety. This service makes it harder for hackers to get access to your ADSL connection.

Protected Access will prevent the following:
- Incoming Web (HTTP) connections.
- Incoming "Telnet" connections that are used for remote access to your PC.
- Incoming connections via commonly hacked channels (ports 254 and 255).

You can disable this service in My Account, (www.mweb.co.za/services/myaccount), once you have changed your settings you need to disconnect and reconnect to the Internet for it to take effect.

Kind regards
MWEB Operations

MWeb Operations, thanks for the update. I did find the setting thanks to Valerion. I do understand now what you are doing and think it is great.

I also appreciate it, that you do give power users the option to turn it off. Now I also understand why I could not Telnet into my server :D

Could this be why I don't get access to the news servers news.mweb.co.za or news2.saix.net? Switched over to mweb yesterday from Telkom and now I cannot access these sites. Phoned call centre and they say they don't "suuport these sites" and its "old technology " !
