The ANC has congratulated the eThekwini Municipality for writing-off R98 million in rent arrears at nine hostels in the area.

"The ANC eThekwini region congratulates the eThekwini Municipality for taking the decision that seeks to ease the economic burden on our people," spokesman James Nxumalo said in a statement.

This would allow them to start on a clean slate and restore their dignity.

"We urge residents at all units to continue co-operating with municipal officials in the signing of lease agreements and payment of rent. This will help in improving and maintaining the infrastructure and living conditions at the units."

The ANC also applauded the municipality for offering motorists an opportunity to clear their traffic fines records by offering a 50 percent discount on all outstanding traffic fines.

"Many motorists have found themselves falling behind in paying for their traffic fines due to the tough economic climate in our country and the world. This is a welcome relief for them, especially the taxi industry."

Nxumalo pleaded with motorists to make use of this opportunity to pay their outstanding fines ahead of the implementation of the Administration Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (AARTO).

"These discounts should also serve as an incentive to drivers to improve their attitudes and obey the laws in order to avoid accumulating more traffic fines."

I'm also going to stop paying my rates and taxes so the ANC can write them off and get more praise:p

Err, stop driving *** rather? ***** the taxi industry, they should be charged double on any fines.
 
Madness.

I fully understand the tactic Ethekwini used by offering a discount if fines/arrears are paid (lots of local governments do that in a desperate effort to recover at least some part of the debt), but still - bad debt is nothing to be congratulated on.

It is merely an accounting tool to use when all else fails and you need to balance the books.

How in heck can a discount be an incentive to obey the law?
 
So all those who paid their fines and rent on time got ripped off. Well now we know not to bother in future, rather wait for a discount or write-off.
Typical ANC stupidity.
 
Not written off, 'transfered' is more like it. The taxpayer will pick up the burden in one way or another ...
 
This actually irritates me....

I live in this damn city, and I've seen the state of those hostels.. They're attrocious, and this is despite the best efforts of the city to keep them looking good and being a vaguely acceptable place to live.

Yeah Ive done work around most of the hostels especially the Umlazi ones on the hill overlooking the old airport. Its shocking to see what goes one there. The wires used to make illegal connections are like a giant spider web going form the buildings to the poles. There are litter dumpsters but they throw their trash out the windows so the base of the buildings are surrounded by deep rubbish..
