Hi guys

Got a 1Tb seagate drive like a year back or so. The drive started failing in windows while running a game on it or just viewing it. Basically it just disappears from my computer as a drive when the error occurs. I swapped it out like 6months back for the exact same model but it never got fixed. I even got a new MB and all the other goodies. When the drive fails and I restart the PC the drive will still be missing until i plug it onto a blank SATA port on my M/B.

This thread is kinda similar
http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barrac...34-The-HD-has-Slowed-down-to-a-very/m-p/35761

Now this problem usually happned once a month, but i had it happen this week like 6 times already.
Seatools long and short tests runs fine with no error. I dont know if upgrading the firmware would be of any help?

Now my drive is kinda full atm and want to buy a new one aswell but will get a 1.5Tb this time. Seagate has always been the best brand but I dont know if it still is the best?

These problems that happens occasionaly irritates me really!!

Related to Seagate firmware bug on 7200.11 Barracuda models.

Is fixable depending on how far along the problem is.

Dump seagate.

Took them so long to get a fix and i don't recall them recalling the bad batch either and they even denied there was a problem.

Samsung or WD will serve you just as well.

Well i would go for samsung then I think. Pitty i still have the old drive then. Dustbin!! argh

It can be fixed, no need to bin it.

I would still buy Seagate, just go for the 7200.12 models.

I saw a guy posting a thread somewhere with a whole lot of manual labour and resoldering etc. Is this what u mean by fixing it ponder? I thought the st31000528as drive is the 7200.12??

According to seagate site and checking firmware update via seria nr they say there is no available firmware update. I checked on google and found a firmware update last nite although i had not done this yet. Will check the firmware versions when i get home.

That serial# checker of theirs sucks donkey ***** if you ask me.

sry for only posting now. im borrowing a hdd for backups maybe tomorow or friday. then i can do the firmware upgrade. i hope this will work.

I backed up my full 1tb last night. then i wanted to run the firmware update but im not sure which drive its gonna upgrade due to the fact that there is no option of selecting the specific hdd. My 1tb is one of my secondary drives and all my hdds are seagate. So I then backed up my primary drive with my OS installed. Time was by then 12 o clock midnight. So i will most propably try update my hdd tonight and unplug my 3rd drive which I have not backed up yet.

Just to update the post. I backed up all data and ran the firmware upgrade through windows. It took a whole 59secs and when it was finished i lost no data whatsoever. Will check the HDD as it happened once every few days. So if it keeps fine for the next 2weeks or so i guess its kwl. Cherz
