Hi all,

Ok so i've been using MSE (microsoft security essentials) as my anti-virus since it came out (or just about).
Havent had any problems with it so far.

What i would like to know is:
- Is it good enough for Internet Banking? (some banks suggest certain programs)
- Online purchases etc...
- E-filing duh...
- Online trading

I know you get where i'm going. So what would be best, non complicated & resource hog.

It is important but even more important than a antivirus is common sense.
1. Don't run exe files from mail/messenger/P2P etc you don't trust.
2. When typing in your logon details on your banking site make sure the lock icon appears.
3. Don't click on links in emails regarding your banking account that look like they come from your bank.
4. Remove beneficiaries from you internet banking that you don't use. Use mail/cellphone notification/approval which most banks will force you to use.
5. Auto enable windows update or regularly update it.

We tend to rotate our Anti-Virus products every 2-3 years or so: and currently I'm using Kaspersky and am very happy with it. I think most major AV's are pretty similar, but we had an issue on a corporate network which only Kaspersky managed to clean and protect.

But the only thing I can really say is this: If MS made such good security software, why would they not embed it into the operating system? In other words, there is no way that I would ever trust a product by MS to keep a product by MS secure ...

Might just be me ...

Previously used ESET, but MSE never gave me any problems thus far.
Was a big surprise to me as well when i found out they were giving away something for free & this time it really worked out of the box.

MSE is just fine for all of the above + always make sure you do the Windows updates regularly.

With regards to online banking, some banks like Standard Bank, prompts you to download Trusteer, a program that runs in the background and checks for keylogging software. It sucks. It takes a HUGE amount of RAM. And is not necessary.

Microsoft will not "bundle" MSE with any Windows OS, cos then all the anti-virus companies out there will file anti-trust/competition law suits against them.

Best protection ever: don't be an idiot. Seriously, don't click on any adverts, ignore emails from people you don't know personally, don't share any access (write permissions) on your computer; and 99.99% of all normal users' problems will never be your problem :)

Off topic - if you do online trading forex / gold / oil, drop me a pm :)

Good advice here.

I've tried them all and using MSE for the last 2 years. I also keep my Windows updated. Thats the secret of any OS.

As a result I've yet to have my machine compromised to the point where I need to reinstall - I was at a lan a few months back where a nasty virus hit us (no suprise). My MSE immediatly blocked it and was I able to do a full recovery of my machine in safe mode. 15 minutes later I was back up gaming. 8 machines on the network (4 belonged to the business we lanned at) had to be taken down and reinstalled.

MSE been serving me well so far, using Firefox i have noscript & adblock+ installed.
Never click any suspect ads etc... So seems im am fully covered. :)

agentrfr: im only just learning about online trading & want to get as much info about it before going into it.

I've been using MS security essentials for about 8 months now. Have used Norton, AVG, Trend, Bitdefender and a whole lot of others. So far MS SE is the best - picks up viruses that the others don't even see. :)
I do Internet banking, online share trading, e-filing, basic web page development, retirement fund stuff, etc etc and have been ok so far - no attack has got through. Seen a lot of virus nasties stopped though - a box pops up to tell me. I also mark tasks that students bring me on flash drives, which are usually crawling with noonoos, and MS has cleaned them up without any problems.
I reckon that the guys at microsoft who actually design the operating system that we run should be the ones who best know how to protect it. I don't really like microsoft, but give the devil his due.:D

Well the best protection for your pc would definitely be to remove the plug from your PSU.. Wrap your case in bubble wrap so you can have fun popping them :) as your pc is no longer useful...
Then again there is always the possibility of a Higgs Boson hitting your HDD and changing the bits..
\sarcasm

I use MSE as well.. Love it.. Simple, quiet(used to have Avast!) and low resource usage..

how about another lawsuite against microsoft ? anti competition shows microsoft as the big bad wolf , the only reason it is not included.

this was actually meant as a reply to bin3 , lol 01:32 - time to sleep

I definetly recommend the new norton internet security suit. It provides the best protection available and the new suit doesnt even make dent in pc resources. Best of all you wont know its there but its definitely doing its job.

Used Norton some years ago, was a resource hog. Not one of my favs.
The bad rep stayed until today.

I also had the same experience but a freind of mine suggested I gave it a try and believe me, its the fastest AV out there.

I only have MSE it works great! Haven't had any virii or maliciousnessness...

I think people should always say at the end of that sentences "that I know of"..
You only know you gave a virus when your AV picks it up or weird **** happens.. Trojans on the other hand will lie dormant, so you might have one or a few without even knowing..

In the past I've used a number of free AVs, but Kaspersky was the first AV that I bought and it was worth every penny. Especially because they allow you to upgrade to a newer version with the same product key.

I'm currently using Eset, and I must say that it is no where near what Kaspersky was.
