ICASA proposes large cuts in call termination rates

a Lot more hot air from i***KA ! I am still paying exactly the same rate I did 2 years ago on my cell contract - no savings are filtering through to the business contracts.

In the case of prepaid some of the rates actually INCREASED
Amen

Contract subscribers are still being raped despite the interconnect rates being cut this year.

As long as Joe the public doesn't benefit in terms of cheap calls then this is a useless excercise IMO. Even if the Interconnect Rate is abolished, if what the consumer pays to make calls is still as two years back then it's even more useless. The Incompetent Communication Authority Of South Africa (iCASA) need to look at what we are charged to make calls not what the operators charge each other IMO. Oh and also look at the data prices, R2 MB is insane!

Competition Rules Price Not Interconnect Rates..............

Interconnection Rates just makes Competition more agressive and easier.

Let the Rates drop to R0.20c per minute and watch the Retail Rates FALL.

100% agree. Until Vodacom and MTN decide to actually start competing with one another, these interconnect rate cuts won't get passed on to the consumers anytime soon.

Don't even get me started on the R2/MB thing! Just thinking about paying over R2000 per gig makes me physically ill...

@DXL - that is definitely what should happen. But I'm fairly certain that the mobile operators have been colluding on their prices for some time... They wouldn't know what competition was if it smacked them in the face.

ICASA is just protecting their master's interests in the new Telkom mobile (Heita), paving an easier entry into the market for them. None of this talk of lowering connection rates its about the consumer. Obviously.

Totally agree. I wondered if I was the only one that noticed an increase in prepaid charges. I even queried but was told I was being charged for accessing the internet on the blackberry. This was despite paying the monthly blackberry package required on a prepaid service. They gave an excuse that my phone settings were wrong that's why I was being charged despite paying for the monthly package. It was a shock since the settings remained the same with the month prior to that, when I was not being charges for internet browsing. The settings were sc****d at some point I remember when they sent an SMS to say VC was experiencing problems with their blackberry services (at the begging of October if I remember correctly. Did I get a refund - NO!!!

While I'm no longer being charged for internet access, I'm still paying more now than I did prior mobile termination rate decrease. If you think prepaid customers are receiving a better deal, think again!

I don't think ICASA will ever be able to understand this stuff. You are right, call termination decreases, we see no benefits. In reality the biggest driver here will be competition. Cell C has progressively increased market share, we now also have the new guys, in about 10 years there should be competition in this market.
