ISDB-T demonstrated in SA

A delegation from Japan is in South Africa to demonstrate their digital broadcasting standards under South African conditions

Lovely and technical.

What I missed in this article is the clear benefit of ISDB-T over DVB-T? If there isn't one, why is anyone in government wasting their time with this (and delaying digital migration). Even if this standard only matches DVB-T why take all these risks?

Wonder if the new Minister will have the cojones to be polite and accept the Jap report and then declare business as usual?

SA does seem to have a track record of wasting valuable tax payers money on white elephants (thinks Pebble Bed Reactors and Military transports) , so perhaps its necessary to do it with digital TV....

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the DoC isn't concerned about which standard is the best for the country. They're just following the trend to go with the solution that offers the biggest bribes or kickbacks. How else do you explain such idiotic fumbling and double talk? Surely no-one is really THAT stupid.

That about sums the issue up.

OKAY... WHo Bribed WHO here? DVB-T is clearly the better option.

something tells me that if the scorpions were still around we wouldn't be having this problem.

Anyone remember analogue satellite TV - they had nice ads! AstraSat - another waste of money...

I just hope the brainless authorities follow the standard used by the first world countries of europe, and use DVB-T. It will make purchasing options and accessories cheaper and easier to find !!!
But then, this is the ANC...so I guess if the Japanese or Brazilians can offer a nice golden handshake to our ministers, then I guess they will get it

It's unclear how much a switch in standards would delay our migration to digital TV broadcasting, but industry players have predicted anything from 3 to 5 years.

This settles it in my mind. Also, when they first started looking at migrating to DTT, DVB was the winner. What has changed? If DOC is seriously considering changing now and setting this back by the time frame above then they they are the biggest scum bags ever and is clearly in it for the potential kick backs. Thats is the short and curly of it in my mind.

Why are they even bothering with this whole charade of "demonstrations"? The bribes have obviously already been paid and we the taxpayer get screwed as usual :(

South African broadcasters also still have years of experience with DVB-T and the current policies and regulations are all written with DVB-T in mind.

Anything else, from all I have read, will be a disaster waiting to happen.

Sadly, I think that bribes will dictate which option our DoC goes with

''ISDB-T set-top boxes could cost as little as $30 (USD), Sugano said.''

R210 at current exchange rates. Maybe to those who will be subsidised, but not to the rest of the consumers in ''rip-off'' SA.

no one has talked about where the anc is getting the money to subsidize the stbs for their voters, a massive increase in tv licenses probably?

 Technically it seems as if they "might' be on to something here. ISDB-T is capable of broadcasting to both televisions and hand-helds (1-Seg/ISDB-Tmm) at no extra cost. Instead of implementing DVB-T & DVB-H separately :wtf:. Then you have ISDB-Tsb (3-Seg) which is basically digital radio which could run off the same service (no DAB required :p). Its all well and good saying that DVB-T is good on paper but in the real world things are different. Look i'm not disputing that DVB-T2 isn't superior but we not a rich country (i.e Sentechs broke )maybe an all in one solution could work. :erm: And if this comes to pass and the Japs keep their end of the bargain we could get that power station ... lord knows we need it. :D Which ever solution is used lets hope it comes out asap !!!

ISDB-T can work in South Africa the same way ATSC can work in South Africa or even the Chinese standard can surely work in South Africa. The bottom line is that Namibia is DVB, we South Africa are 60% DVB, just like Mauritius and Kenya. It is absolutely much more inteligent migrating migrating to DVB-T2 than, of course! When we talk about handheld, DVB-H supports more than double capacity of chanels than 1-seg and in Colombia for example, where DVB-T was adopted, DVB-H is free of charge! No cost extra!
But DVB-T2 is still the best standard in the World, and its superiority and flexibility will make us forget isdb-t, dvb-t, and dvb-h! Trust me!
