The recent iOS updates have mostly been welcome improvements for iPhone 4 and 3GS users, but it's been a decidedly different story for folks sticking to their venerable iPhone 3G. Not only have they been left out of some of the fun, but they were dealt a serious performance hit with iOS 4.0 that was only somewhat corrected by IOS 4.1. Could iOS 4.2 finally bring things back up to speed? According to the folks at TiPb, it just might -- they've now tested the iOS 4.2 gold master on an iPhone 3G and found that performance was noticeably improved across the board. Head on past the break to check out their results for yourself, and keep your fingers crossed that you'll actually see a similar improvement when the official update finally hits your 3G.

No it's not officially released yet. It should be quite soon though.

Yes definitely - runs more like the iOS3 firmware - haven't played with it too much but there is a definite speed improvement - definitely better than iOS4.1

good news indeed. can finally update my mom's phone!!

MD5SUMS for iPhone 3G and 3GS:

I've discovered these .ipsw files are actually good old PKZIP archives, so to test their integrity you can just rename them adding a .zip extension, test in your favourite archiving utility, then rename back.

Upgraded yesterday, no issues. Phone is running well. SMS still takes a few seconds to open, but nothing a future iPhone 4 upgrade can't fix ;)

Just be careful to get the GM version 2 if you have an iPad. Damn near got a heart attack when I upgraded a relative's iPad to 4.2 Beta 3 due to all the blogs raving about it, and then it would not activate because the device's unique identifier was not registered with the developer program.

I thankfully found a place online where you could get it registered for $6 and after doing that, everything was fine again.

Think I am done with betas now and will wait for the official version to come out before updating again. ;)

Yup beta's require you to have a registered device ID. GM's however are the final release before it goes public and you can load this without being registered. I did however see a recent article on iOS 4.2 for the iPad breaking wifi.

Yes, it has a Wifi issue.

Apple quickly recompiled another GM version (8c134b) to rectify this, which I already have a copy of. I will wait for them to officially announce it as the one which is going to be the official relase, before installing it.

From what I read, it appears you might have needed to have had itunes 10.1b installed in order to successfully update the firmware.

Such a pity 4.2 isn't out today. Had been looking forward to the speed improvements. I swap across a number of applications in the same session, so it flowing better would definitely be a productivity boost for me.

A work colleague confirms that the 'b' version has fixed his Wifi issues.
