A WiMax base station still have a wider coverage though, but yes, 3GPP is the future. Especially with the 100MiB/s the 4G technology is promising.

We need to watch not to get used to equating 4G with 100Mb/s. It really should be 4G=1Gb/s. 100Mb/s is the 'low speed' option for high mobility (like when you're on the bullet-train).

Otherwise the GSMA is making exactly the same statements being heard throughout the industry; "Harmonise and allocate spectrum prompto!"
 
Interesting stuff. Basically, if we (SADC it seems) work together to pull this off, we'll be doing very well. If we squabble over potions of the pie and cock it all up, the SADC population will be stuck paying for the mistake for years. Useless equipment, congested/slow spectrum. There's a lot riding on this.

Wonder which way things'll go.
 
@Jannie - I know you're no longer with iBurst, but is there an upgrade path from iBurst (HC-SDMA) to LTE? Or is iBurst dead in the water, on its way out?

iBurst, the technology, has been taken up in the 802.20 standard but unfortunately that's where it's at today.

There is only one vendor (Kyocera) manufacturing equipment and this together with the small footprint globally (SA is the biggest network) makes for a catch-22 situation. Not enough demand to drive development and push manufacturing costs down and thus no deployments because speeds don't compare and costs are too high.

So the practical answer for iBurst providers would be to switch to another technology, most likely WiMax.

But this, in turn, will only buy them a few years as WiMax will in the next few years become a niche technology. And the "iBurst" cycle will repeat itself.
 
@Jannievanzyl what i meant is 100 megabytes per sec not 100Mb/s (which is megabits).
OK, got you.

But there is a tendency in the press to only mention 100Mb/s as the speed requirement for 4G. Which will quickly lead to network providers calling their LTE networks 4G.

HSPA+ has a path all the way up to 168Mb/s, but it's not 4G.

Probably both, especially as the frequencies will likely be different. 800MHz would be perfect for LTE but for this to happen the TV broadcasting standards must be sorted. Otherwise 2.6GHz but (again) stuff needs to be sorted before it can happen. Spectrum must be cleaned up, harmonised, allocated, etc.

Always a "but" when it come to spectrum, it seems......:rolleyes:
 
well stopping terrestrial tv broadcasting altogether will make it much easier to harmonise a lot of bandwidth. Get rid of Sentech (its fully state owned?) and you solve the 2.6 problem as well. Sat and IPTV broadcasting is the way forward.

What was the attraction to the technology in the first place? Was it ever remotely superior to the current 3G standard at any time in its history?

Yes, it actually was. And by quite a bit.

When the GSM/UMTS crowd were getting all excited about 384kb/s, iBurst was already running 1Mb/s using adaptive antenna technology. It's only in the last 2 years that we started to see similar intelligent antenna technologies.

It's an all-IP solution, something the 3GPP crowd only got right recently (just ask Lars, he loves to explain it).

So, all in all, a technology years ahead of it's time when it launched.

Unfortunately, they never moved on from that point and the rest of the industry caught up and overtook them big time.
