First Samsung Galaxy Tab contract details emerge

For some reason Apple has not marketed its iPad in South Africa. So there is no serious competition for the Samsung Galaxy. The iPad would be a clear winner between the two; bigger screen, cheaper and a much better app store, just to mention a few. I will not settle for anything less than the iPad. Apple wake up and bring us the iPad please!!

That's fair... but I have NO interest in making voice calls on a tablet. If any, I will use VoIP to make these calls. Would love to hear some more packages with data only.

slightly misleading title I think .. the galaxy tab has been available on MTN data packages for a while already ..

Too heavy:

iPad - 0.73 kg
Galaxy Tab - 0.38kg

And on new contracts? Geez for R300/month I'll take one ...

Yeah R300 a month sounds good. Total cost with 75MB of data a month comes to R7176 over 24 months. Hmmm. I favour MTN on this one (Sorry Cell C). I am more interested in the Tab itself, rather than receiving a large data bundle.

MTN's R300/month for the device and Cell C's R149/month for 2GB - 7 Mbps data simcard. Then you have highspeed mobile 2GB data internet device for R450 a month. :) Take note Cell C for an all-in-One package; I think R399 sounds fair.

Thanks for posting the pricing info, but I actually swung by some MTN shops last night (Cell Network / MTNSP and MTN Direct) and they said they couldn't confirm pricing or availability. Head office had apparently not given them any information about when they could expect stock or what the final package pricing would be.

Hopefully it doesn't change from what's on the website now.

That's true, but I won't be needing much data. I have Wifi at the office and at home, so will only need data in between. So for that, I would rather have a cheaper option.

I also just called them and they can't confirm when it will be available. But they are expecting it to be next month.

I used an ipad for a short while, too big and too heavy. You need a slipcover of some sort, it felt really uncomfortable to hold, as if it was going to drop.
The Samsung looks awesome, when new Android Gingerbread is released, this thing gonna be the **** hottest device!!!!

I own an iPad and have played with the Galaxy Tab as well. The iPad in my opinion the clear winner. The screen quality of the iPad is unbeatable folks. NONE of the Android based tablets gets anywhere close to the iPad in terms of image quality - that is something that cannot be argued unless you're blind.

The Galaxy Tab is too small to be a proper tablet and too large to be a cellular handset. It's very strange and I cannot find a use for it. It's as if it's confused as to what it wants to be. The iPad on the other hand is brilliant and is a solid tablet made for mobile computing/entertainment/connectivity - all in one.

I agree the iPad is heavy and may actually surprise you the first time that you hold one, but I do have the iFolio case for it and that makes a huge difference and it does feel "safer" in your hands when you know you've got some form of protective gear on it.

I would also like to mention that I have the 64GB version with WiFi and 3G - and I paid R6000 for it. Obviously that's not the local price at all, but I would rather pay R8000 for the iPad instead of the Galaxy Tab any day of the week.

Couldn't have said it better. I'm also an iPad 64GB 3G owner, last week i had an opportunity to play with a Galaxy Tab, as light as it is, it looks cheap, thick and the screen is too small about half the size of the iPad.

iPad will always win, android is not meant for tablets. Well, until gingerbread comes out.

And for R8k, i'd rather get an ipad....RRP is South Africa is a joke...lol.

It is strange Cell C are offering this on a voice contract. Do they have a dual sim option?

Anyway, MTN's pricing is no good. What are you guys going on about. CellC R429 with 220 anytime minutes and 500MB data vs MTN R300 with no airtime and only 75MB data. Come on.

Anyway this package and all alternatives are fail.

Cell C should just offer as a data contract only with 2GB for R399 haha. okay R499

At least the Galaxy Tab can view Flash - that, to some people is a huge advantage.

No - it is not half the size. iPad is 10.1" and the Galaxy tab is 7". So it's 30% smaller. But I know what you mean, next to each other thats the feel you get.

I don't need 500MB of data for my mobile devices. I have 5GB already with Cell C, I have 30GB with WA and top ups whenever I need. I want a tablet, I don't want 500MB a month with 220 voice minutes. I will use the existing data I have. What I want is a lower monthly cost - even if there is no data, it suits me just fine.

I can see how the Cell C option will work for some, but for me, it doesn't.
