Wife needs a TV in a gym-type room ... was thinking of just getting a 32" or smaller, but maybe I should move my LG 42" plasma there and get a new LCD ...

If I go this route, I'd like to get something a bit bigger, like 46" ... if I'm gonna spend money, I at least want it to feel like an upgrade. Looking at LCD because it is in a big double volume room with a lot of light ... used a lot during the day and mostly sitting on 4:3 channels like CBeebies and Nickelodeon.

Must have very very good black levels.
This one will not be used in conjunction with a sound system, so it needs to have good built-in speakers.
Which one? ... and where to buy?

I would go for a Sony KDL-46EX500. I have the ex400 and it is stunning, especially the black levels. It also diffuses light very well, so reflections are not a problem.

The EX500 has 100hz motion plus which will help with motion judder.

The speakers on the EX400 aren't great, so not sure how they are on the EX500...

See if you can get Makro to give you the Samsung 46'Lcd for the special price they had for R10k,but personally I'd go for the Sammy 50' plasma especially if its for DSTV.

That is the one I was thinking about ... at Makro on special for R12999 at the moment.

R10K doesn't sound too bad ... can't find any 46" Samsung on their site now ... model?

Yeah, forgot to mention that DSTv SD needs to be good as well ...

Yip, the 50" HD Ready plasmas (and even some of the 50" FullHD plasmas on special) are definitely the best bang-for-buck, but reflections are actually a bit of a problem in this room ...

Can't remember the model but its the one with the rectangular base. They were basically giving it away during their birthday bash. They've been known to give discounts on items on were previously seliing at a lower price.Give it a shot maybe you get lucky.

Do you have an HDPVR? The reason I ask is because sd programming on my TV with the HDPVR looks very good, but I can't speak for what the quality will be like without it... They do upscale quite well generally speaking anyway! Bang for buck I really like the Sony hey

Yip, have an HD-PVR ... and yes, you're right ... major difference between SD via HDMI and SD via RCA.

I'd take a look at the Samsung 46" LCD.

I bought a Series 6 and it's pretty amazing - blows my plasma away. If you read the reviews, it's got one of the highest black levels of any LCD, surpassing many plasma displays. If you don't end up buying - at least take a look at the quality and features (DLNA, media 2.0, Internet TV etc).

Mmm ... I would prefer a LOW black level ;)

Thanks Dolby, will check them out ... I think somebody (maybe you) also mentioned that the Series 6 is actually a LOT better than the Series 5 models.

Greggle - no ... Haven't tried. I don't use any of the features :/ I do recall someone starting a thread in this section though?

TYR - sorry - that's what I meant ;) I didn't actually look at the Series 5, but the Series 6 is amazing and part of the reason I fight with Postman. Its laughable a budget plasma is better IMO.

I did - however - walk in to purchase a Sony 46" and after seeing the Sammie, walked away with it. All reviews give it 5 stars as well.

EDIT Series 5 is 50hz?

Samsung 6 series. I see it's around the R15k mark.

That's a bit plums 'n pears like, don't you think? ;) It would be a lot more realistic if you gave more details, such as age of the units, etc.

Similar to your 'any plasma is better than any LCD'?

Or your amended one where an entry level plasma is better than most LCDs?

That's akin to saying to any CMOS sensor is superior to any CCD sensor ; any supercharger is superior to any turbo charger ; any diesel is superior to any petrol ...

There's a reason both exist

The reason is so that Plasma can be better than LCD;)

*bite tongue* ;)

I'm not going to derail the thread though. I just think he should at least look at the Series 6 LCD before selecting - that'll make me feel good ;)

Plasma is the better image technology in general. Couldn't care less about comparing one specific LCD set to another specific plasma set (to suit your agenda). If you want to do that, then understand that the best TV in the world is a plasma. I've never said any plasma is better than any LCD. :erm: That would be doff, and you have spent countless hours copying and pasting the same old data comparing your 6 Series LCD to more expensive plasmas that proves this (and like I said, I couldn't care less about specific sets vs. specific sets; the outcome of that way of argument is totally obvious that LCD would sometimes win). I'm speaking in general about the technology where plasma generally produces better blacks, colours, colour accuracy, etc. How you still misconstrue this is beyond me, it's no wonder you are still battling your lost war. :D
