On paper, the Altec Lansing M602BLK is an impressive performer.

When it comes to choosing a speaker set for your iPod or MP3 player, there is plenty of hardware out there to choose from. Like few other brands out there, Altec Lansing has consistently been producing good-looking peripherals, and while we have not always loved their product offerings, the company has produced some impressive and very much desirable hardware over the years.

This month we are looking at one of their powered, portable audio systems, the M602BLK. Even though this speaker set has a rather unattractive numbering nomenclature, it does offer a few interesting features that should appeal to anyone who has a portable music player. For starters, this speaker set was designed to be used with an iPod. The cradle can accommodate any of the iPod models, and should you make use of the composite-video port on the back of the unit, you will be able to play video from your iPod on any TV. The bundled remote control is also geared towards the iPod user: you are able to pause, search, and skip your music on the iPod, and you can also adjust the treble and bass levels without leaving the comfort of your armchair. You can also control the volume using the buttons situated at the top end of these speakers.

A rather nice aesthetic feature is the LEDs situated just above the Altec Lansing logo on the front of the device. These light up when the volume or level controls are accessed, and they also indicate the levels at which the volume, bass, and treble are set. If you do not own an iPod, you can make use of the auxiliary input on the back of the Altec Lansing M602BLK to connect your favourite MP3 player. The M602BLK comes bundled with a 3.5mm audio cable, and there is even a universal cradle included that will allow you to mount any device while using the auxiliary port.

Also on the back of the Altec Lansing M602BLK speaker system, you will find a mini-USB port and an earphone jack. The latter is self-explanatory, but the USB port turns this system into a cradle for your iPod, allowing you to synchronise it with your PC without ever removing it from the cradle.

On paper, the Altec Lansing M602BLK is an impressive performer. So how does its audio quality compare to that of other iPod docks? Well, the sound quality is good, but not at loud levels. The sound quality drops the louder you ‘tweak’ the volume, but for listening to music at a reasonable volume – such as at the office – this speaker set will certainly not disappoint.
