This ultra-slim notebook makes computing on the go an absolute pleasure

While we have been seeing more and more netbooks of late getting ever more powerful, things on the notebook front have not been slowing down. It seems that the ‘influence’ of netbooks is finding its way into just about everything: from HTPCs, touch-screen desktops and now even notebooks. The X-Slim line of notebooks, as the name suggests, features the slimmest notebooks from MSI. These notebooks are focused on style and aesthetics rather than outright performance and functionality.

However, the last part is only true in theory, as the X600, in particular, is one very impressive unit. In fact, it is among the more powerful ones you can buy from any brand. The X600 is one of the thinnest 15.6-inch notebook on the market weighing in at just 2.1kg. In this very thin profile, however, MSI has crammed a 500GB SATA 3Gb/sec 2.5-inch hard drive, 4GB of DDR2 memory and a discreet Radeon HD 4330 graphics processor with a dedicated 512MB of memory. These specifications make it a very powerful notebook, capable of just about anything you could throw at it.

Even though the review unit we received featured the Core 2 Solo processor, Corex assured us that the units that will ship to South Africa will feature the dual core version. The Webcam is great, the sound processor is capable of Dolby Surround, and the notebook has built-in, HD full-frame video acceleration and an HDMI output. The notebook has no less than four speakers, which allow one to enjoy a pseudo-surround-sound effect of sorts while viewing media on the unit.

The rest of the specifications are what one would expect, including Wi-Fi capability, Bluetooth, and the standard D-sub VGA output. As with all ultra-thin notebooks, there is no optical drive, so one would have to make use of flash drives, or purchase an external drive to use. Nevertheless, for most people this will not be an issue, as the hard drive is large enough to house just about all the software you would ever need on the go.

Aesthetically, the notebook cannot be faulted: it looks good, the thin profile lends itself well to the overall appeal, and it certainly looks impressive in glossy black (a spiffy all white model is also available). If a notebook says anything about a person’s sense of style, then the X600 notebook speaks volumes: it’s possibly the most stylish notebook ever from MSI.
